G-Shock Mod Failure

Well this did not go according to plan. My plan was to do a pretty extensive Mod on my GW-M5610-1 G-Shock. Step one was to change the glass to GW-M5610-TH mineral crystal. I had found the replacement glass on eBay. I thought getting rid of the red trim on the GW-M5610-1 mineral crystal would lead to a more monochrome stealthy look. The intent was to pop the crystal, carefully remover the solar glass/cells glued to the back of the original crystal, glue the solar glass to the new crystal, ensure the solar battery charging wires/springs still hit the correct spots, and put it back together.

I will say all went according to plan and it looked pretty awesome. However, I noticed some dust was stuck between the mineral crystal and Solar glass. So I tore it down again and cleaned it. However, when pressing the crystal back in I failed to notice the gasket was rolling and the solar cell glass cracked.

Not sure if I want to get another GW-5610-1 and try again or see if I can find the solar glass part somewhere and try again or just give up.

Learnt a lot about the inner workings of a G-Shock but am sad as it looked amazing before I broke it.

I'll never understand modders.

Good for you all for trying but I just don't get it.

Especially when someone tries to sell one.

I've always been a DIY junkie .... I may have a problem. It goes beyond watches; campers, yard furniture, gym equipment, old cars, .... . I even made a boomarang that worked once.

I've no interested in selling them myself but I follow a lot of modders on Instagram, they post a watch and it sells immediately. I'm not sure I get it either bc for me the fun is the build buying one built by someone else would rob me of the part I enjoy.

Unlucky, on the bright side, you’re up the learning curve

not sure what you are into style wise, but I first started scratching the DIY bug with cheap ST36 movements. They are big, and way less expensive than NH movements. Breaking/losing stuff seems to be part of learning, but it gets so much easier after first couple mods

Yeah wish I had started with Vostok mods. Unless I’m ripping into a digital watch I’m pretty seasoned now.
