There is a lot of gray area with the term "Independent."
It's often people are just referring to financial independence.
With how many brands are owned by only 3 companies, (Swatch group, LVMH, and Richemont) being financially independent has become a pretty significant achievement.
After financial independents, there's companies that are materialy independent. These are the real manufacturers. Whereas a lot of financial independents are just ordering parts from large suppliers, these companies actually do their own manufacturing from raw metal stock. Some even make their own metal and glass.
So, there's a lot of gray area even between these two concepts, and even more can be said of what designates a "micro brand."
I can understand where you're coming from.
That said, I can notice and appreciate those small differences, and I do have a sense for when I might be paying for exclusivity, branding, artisan vs machine made, and so on.
As long as I'm informed as a buyer, I won't regret my purchase. This makes me open to having some really nice straps. My primary two watches are both 20mm with a similar style, so in theory the straps can swap around too.
When it comes to this watch space, I would think most of us can see the similarities of diminishing returns between a high end strap and a high end watch. For example, a 75 dollar field watch vs a 5,000 dollar field watch. There's a similar situation going on there as well.
I wouldn't unless the company has statements and guarantees backing it as a swimming and ocean capable watch. I would email them to get a written response.
