It started in the summer of 2019 when I turned 50 and decided I should get a decent watch. Why not start by doing some research on YouTube to make sure you pick a good one?
I turned 50 the summer of 2019. Told myself that I should get a decent watch. Better do some research on YouTube to make sure you pick a good one.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
In early 1970-something, I got a Timex hand wind mechanical. I am thinking it was the original Marlin, but that's a guess.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
In 1992 my roommate spent some time in St. Petersburg, Russia. Brought me back a 24-hour Rateka as a gift. Came on a paper-thin leather strap with a little plastic image of hero-of-the-Soviet-Union Yuri Gargarin punched into it.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Everybody says to go slow. Don't get carried away. Don't buy too many watches too fast. You won't listen. We all need to make our own mistakes.
But seriously, never buy a watch that will cause you serious financial hardship.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Omega. Nomos. Sinn.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. I have always been drawn to the stars, science, and the sea. Jacques Cousteau epitomizes the latter two. I find the prospect of having a watch (brand) with which he was connected very appealing.
