In my job (military, security) it was primarily about the functionality of the watch. Now that I'm retired, the main thing for me is whether I like the watch and whether it appeals to me. The best prerequisite for a beautiful watch collection...
It all started with the first beautiful watch that I was allowed to call my own. This was the CERTINA DS from 1964. My grandfather's watch, which I inherited. I realized that there were so many beautiful clocks... well, man has been a hunter-gatherer since time immemorial... so I hunt for beautiful clocks to collect them ;-)
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
The first watch I can remember was the CASIO 106 H101 Marlin in the 1980's.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
Every watch in my collection has a backstory. That is one of the requirements for a watch to make it into my collection.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Don't look for "investments" in watches...life is too short to lock something beautiful in a safe. If you really like a watch, you can afford it and maybe you can connect it with a story, then wear it and enjoy it as often as possible.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
There are a few brands out there. Recently it was definitely the WEMPE and STEINHART brands.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
My absolute dream of a watch since childhood is the Rolex Daytona 116500LN Steel White 40mm...
a beautiful watch, an image of aesthetics with a touch of legend and unattainability :-)
