Has anyone put a Casio F91 on a metal strap?

I was looking at metal bands on Aliexpress, but wasn't sure if I'd run into issues.

I had a couple F91s over the past several years, but the bands always broke. This was the last one I had, but it was left in a drawer, and I thought had been thrown away. To my surprise, it was still there.

Battery was still good, only was running a few minutes fast, and the crystal is in amazing shape. Just needs a strap, and I thought it would be more durable to get a metal one.

If the metal strap isn't a feasible, let me know a strap mod you'd recommend.

Thanks!

18mm NATO strap. Very comfortable.

I have (below) a vintage 15mm twist-o-flex type expandable watch band stamped as "Hong Kong Stainless Steel" its fairly close to this Amazon piece but Im not 100% so buyer beware. https://a.co/d/6RSL2Bw this combo on a resin silver-colored case is my main 'grab and go'.

Why not get this?

As well as these.

Tan colored Barton Silicone strap.

Or this MN green strap on the green F91w.

Just other non-steel ideas. Have fun with it all! Show us the final product later, good luck.

I have to ask…how on earth are you breaking these, particularly more than one?! 😂

I think you might be the poster boy for a G-Shock!

I originally was going to put it on a nato or Zulu, but didn't have an 18mm. I'll probably pick it up a few. Great looking combo.

I plan on getting an A168. It just feels wasteful to toss a perfectly usable watch and bands can be picked up for $2-4 on aliexpress.

Looking good. And thanks for the different option photos. I'll post a photo as soon as I get it fixed up.

🤣 I'm pretty rough on watches. Not sure 100% why or what I do specifically. The one exception I can cite a specific reason did involved rough housing with my brother and two punches I threw sending the F91 to Valhalla. 🤣 My brother was and is fine to anyone concerned. I do live in a rural area that is hot most of the year. I did acquire a DW6900 in December and picked up a Timex Ironman Endure Shock.

The F91's main point of failure is the band. Which has been one reason why I've had to replace it before (after duct taping the band for the better part of a year 🤣). I've broken numerous resin bands just from sleeping with a watch on.

In particular they are broken to what I've deemed "heat fatigue." That softer resin band will start to sweat some sort of liquid at a certain point when it gets warm enough. It may even discolor, but eventually - or even rather quickly- it'll become brittle and break into pieces. Which I've had all that happen from sleeping with those types of watches on.

Yeah regardless of what youtubers say, Casio is not God Tier. They have production flaws like everyone else. Whether module issues like the new WS1700 or the f91w's backlight or resin bands- not the best for sure. I hear ya. They're good but not perfect, no one is.

Casio does have its shortcomings as does any other watch. I don't like the term god-tier as it is misleading. It does have a mass appeal and a wide range of price points, while having a good build quality.

I do think Casio does design some of their watches with intentional flaws or shortcomings. Though, I'm sure they've produced some that are unintentionally flawed. Yet, they are incredible watches and are fun.

·

Glad we agree. Enlighten me on these intentional shortcoming that they create? What is your point of view on it all? I'm not familiar.

I think my prime example, which is something that (in my mind) confirmed my theory, is the Casio W800H. Overall, a decent watch and a number of features, including: time, stop watch, alarm, day/date, and night light. The only thing it's missing is a count-down timer that other watches at a higher price point have. However, it does have a count-down timer.

This function isn't available on the 800, despite the mechanism having the capability. The reason is Casio added a bit of solder to the chip to prevent it from being available. The mechanism can be modded by removing the solder and unlocking the feature.

And technically adding the extra solder would add cost (even if it's incredibly small) in material and production time. Only two reasons to really do this. First, being that it's to make a buyer drop more money on a more expensive watch or on a watch with larger profit margin. The second is because there are vague plans at some point to reuse the movement in a future release with the extra selling point of the timer. Even if the second is true, it would still result in that watch being at a higher price.

So, I tend to think when we get things like this or say an an F91 vs the A158 (fixes the strap issue) vs the A168 (fixes the F91 strap issue & the poor night light) it is a way to upsell customers.

A lot of companies do this where they'll drop three products at 3 price points where the prices are chosen to push people into buying a particular model, or same with menu items at restaurants.

Casio still offers value for money, which is why they sell a lot of their various models.

I see, good points. I work in the auto business and I am a marketer, so understand your POV completely. Grade walk differences, decontenting strategies, and up-market positioning/upselling arent alien to me. Why have one brand when u can sell more with two and have double the revenue stream (Casio/GShock, VW/Audi or Toyota/Lexus). Well said, so noted, buyers beware. Business is business. Thx brother.

Try a rubber strap with a nice clasp. Hard to beat!
