Crown Design

I think one of the most overlooked parts of a watch is the crown, which is strange because it's one of the parts we most interact with.

Cle de Cartier has a key-like design that not only integrates to the case beautifully but also gives you an interesting winding experience.

What are some crown designs on watches you own or you found to be perculiar or interesting? Would love to learn more about them!

This one has a lever that flips out of the caseback rather than a crown.

Some Ball watches have an interesting crown lock device too.

Ah I forgot about this watch! Very cool, I wonder if they'll ever bring it back.

That's very cool! Ball watches seriously need more recognition.

I’m in two mindsets when it comes to crowns.

Firstly, the majority of my watches don’t have much going on with them for a crown, even my vintage VC or Omega. The Bubble, for all its dial and crystal just has a rounded steel crown with a single black line around its equator. I’m lucky if I get a logo or letter engraved on it, even with £00s or £000s watches. So, I’m not particularly fussed, except when I do get one…

… I go Cartier and my crown has it’s own thing going on. Go big or go home right?

I mean as long as it works right? But I also enjoy well thought out designs, really reminds me why the watch cost me a couple months of rent. 😂

If we want well-thought out designs then crown on the left as I wear the watch on my left wrist. You think I’d try and buy one without knowing it’s going to bore straight into my wrist, but I’m stupid and that’s fine by me. That Cartier skewers me all the time, especially since the jewel has a point, yet I love wearing it.

Keeping on the theme of Cartier, I like the Anglaise crown too

I like vintage seikos where the crown sits flush with the case and can only be seen from the side, gives case a real clean look 👍

Small crowns should be illegal

waste of time, a deal breaker for me.

I have just got rid of an Omega Speedmaster moon watch, the crown was too small and in a very awkward place on the watch, winding it was a very uncomfortable experience indeed.

Another example is the Orient Mako 3, another ridiculously small crown, which spoils the watch.

This is my number 1 complaint with the Orient Mako II as well 😫.
