Adventure, here I come!

Hi everyone,

Currently I'm considering adding a black dial watch to my collection.

I've narrowed it down to three watches in basically three categories: new and not the price of a car, new and wait for it, neo-vintage.

For the first category, I have the Sinn 556i in mind. I've already owned this watch in the past and somehow can't get it out of my head. Only time I've ever had sellers remorse ๐Ÿ˜€

+ Relatively good price

+ Immediately available and new

+ Serviceable

+ Sinn is one of my fav brands, love their styling

+ Glossy dial is really nice

+- All satin finish

- Movement is nothing to call home for

- Clasp needs long fingernails made of steel

For the wait-list, I've opted for the Rolex Explorer 124270. Have tried on this watch multiple times and really like the way it wears and looks.

+ Really well made watch

+ Love the adventure history connected to it

+ Bracelet is comfortable

+ Dial is beautiful

+-Brand "baggage"

- Rolex wait-list games

- Quite expensive for a no date three hander

- No proper on the fly adjust for a >7kโ‚ฌ watch

As my neo-vintage option, I'd chose the Rolex Explorer 114270. Haven't been able to try it on, but appreciate, that it's somewhere in between the 556i and the 124270 when considering style.

+ Still an actual tool watch

+ Immediately available

+ Rugged look

+ An actual 36mm watch

+- Bracelet and clasp have a vintage feel

- Expensive for a 15 to 20 year old watch

- Risks associated with buying expensive vintage

- No AR coating!

Get a watch that leaves me some budget breathing room for the year? Wait for a watch that uses up my watch budget? Get something immediately, that'll also use up a big portion of the budget? What would you do? I have my collection on my profile, if you want to see what'll fit in best.

It depends on your adventure.

if you adventure is to dive into the next local shopping mall during sales season, then tge Rolexes are your way to go.

But if you like the style, the Sinn would be a nobrainer in any case.

I personally would rather go with one of these. The Altherr midell is a colabo with a famous german watch retailer and a limited edition. I know some who changed their 556 to get them instead. But it's a matter of taste.

Fair enough. Love the very engineering aesthetic of the 556, it's like what I wold imagine a modern German watch to be, form follows function. I really dig the glossy black dial of the 556i, but will be checking out all 556 variants at my local AD on Friday (except for the Altherr edition, also I think that version is already sold out if I'm not mistaken).

I guess you have enough bling in other pieces. I vote for Sinn.

Rolex movements are fine and all, but you might sometimes find youself thinking it's a bit boring. What is your experience with these expensive brands? If you can appreciate them, Rolex still might be a good option for you, but they're not tool watches anymore.

Alternatives: Tudor Ranger, Omega Railmaster, Oris Bigcrown Propilot.

Yeah, I feel I do need something I can actually wear to change my tires or chop wood without thinking about it to much.

I do appreciate the relatively expensive stuff in my collection, but not sure about going up further in price much... The other stuff you can see for 10k+โ‚ฌ starts getting funky looking ๐Ÿ˜„ I feel the Explorer would be the limit.

Tried on the Trilogy Railmaster last week, wasn't immediately blown away. Will give it another test drive on Friday...

Wood chopping and tyre changes? Citizen Promaster, Casio G-shock (or any digital Casio).

I love the vertical brushing on the contemporary model, but that's not a black dial.

Yeah I had the Silver Dial version of the modern model. Absolutely awesome watch, no question! But couldn't defend having basically two Aqua Terras in the collection ๐Ÿ˜œ

Yes, you are right. It's already sold out.

I voted Sinn, but you could also look at Tudor Ranger...

Yeah and I'm not paying some scalper over MSRP for any watch ๐Ÿ˜‰

We'll see if Rolex ever want to sell me one ๐Ÿ˜‚

Have had a look at the Ranger a couple of times, couldn't connect with it. Maybe if they update it and make it a bit more compact?

Oh, man, if I won the lottery, I'd have the holy trinity - Seaweed SMP, teracotta Aquaterra, and blue Railmaster. ๐Ÿ˜…

How about the iwc ingenieur?

Tried one on last week. A bit too overpriced for my taste. But am keeping an eye on IWC! Having another look at a Spitfire on Friday.

What about an IWC Mark XX? Different dial options. 100m WR. 120 hour power reseve. Very cool bracelet adjustment system. Andโ€ฆavailable! ๐Ÿ˜€
