50's era Movado

The post man dropped this off yesterday for me. A 1950's era Movado cal.205. I need to have my watch maker give it a service and replace the strap before putting it into the rotation.

But so far so good. I wound it up yesterday around 4 and set the time. As of this morning it's still ticking away and holding pretty good time. Which I'm surprised, I used the app on my phone to see how it was doing. It was all over the place running as slow as 38 seconds and as fast as 70 seconds.

And speaking of ticking. I can hold this watch up to my ear and hear the ticking good and loud. This is something that I remember doing with my first watch as a kid. It's fun to be able to do it again. None of my new watches tick like this one does. 😁

I'm thinking about having the face refinished, what do you think about doing something like that?

I’d wait for the full servicing to decide on refinishing. May discover new crystal and cleaning might suffice.

Refinishing a dial is personal preference usually but can affect resale value. If you think this watch might attract future watch buyers due to some historical or horological uniqueness, it might be better left as is.

·

How is the winding action with the smooth crown?

I would only change the crystal and get a new strap. I think it’s better to preserve the uniqueness of the dial in these cool vintage watches. Enjoy it

Unless the dial is illegible, do not refinish it.

Kim Jon Un's favorite brand.

It's pretty tough. Besides being smooth it's the smallest crown in the collection.

I would get a service and maybe the crystal polish but wouldn't touch the dial it tells it's own story about the daily life of the watch

Dials can be particularly delicate. I’d polish or replace the crystal then decide how you like that patina with a clear view. 👍🏻

I personally would leave it as is, until the face cracks or the strap goes. By that time, you will know whether you love it enough for watchmaker TLC. But I like the roached aesthetic, it tells a story. Like this fugly chap, it has a face only it's Mum can love; but I know it is a Buren at heart which keeps time really well!

Well, I stopped by my favorite LWM (Local Watch Maker) dropped this old man off for some TLC. Right now the plan is to replace the crown with a new one. He believes that he can get a NOS crown for this at a reasonable price, if it's too much he will go aftermarket. He's going to clean up and polish the crystal, but leave the face alone. Lastly he's going to give it a close look and see if it needs a full service or not. He said that he should have it back to me in 7-10 days.
