All the Small Things…Grand Seiko SBGH311 Sea of Clouds

When is a watch too small?

My Fiancé passed by the Grand Seiko store in Boston today and took a peak to see if they had the ‘Sea of Clouds’ piece that I have had my eye on for a few weeks now and won’t shut up about. They did in fact have it in store and she surprised me with this wrist shot.

While I was delighted that she thought of me and sent it, I was a bit dismayed at how well it fit her wrist. She is a small petite gal and I am a pretty big fella (6’2 260lbs 7.8 inch wrist for context).

According to your standard dimension chart, given my wrist size, I technically shouldn’t wear anything sub 38mm. The SBGH311 measures in at 37mm.

Obviously, I need to get it on wrist to actually see if I like the look/fit, but what do y’all think? Any advice or rules of thumb people have for watch size?

That dial is gorgeous. And you'd be surprised how differently watches look on your wrist than hers. Go try it on

What yours is her and her is yours. If you think you can pull it off, wear it. I have an 8 1/2” wrist. 37mm for is to small. I do wear an 39mm Omega. It’s small but I rock it.

Definitely try it on wrist yourself!

My personal experience has been that I’ll obsess over a particular GS for months, go into an AD, and EVERY TIME, end up buying a completely different model I’d never considered before!

Well your collection is certainly magnificent because of it! I do not own one yet and to say I am obsessed is an understatement. Need a Grand Seiko like I need air to breathe lol

I thought my Kurono at 36 was gonna look to small but took a flyer on it for the dial - size looks great!

Sometimes you don’t know till it’s on wrist!

Many would think that this is small, but I like it.

31,5mm; ±7" wrist

That case and lug to lug dimensions wear much bigger than the vintage Seiko or classic SNK 37mm. I think you should try it on.

·

I got one of them girthy wrists too fella and I can confidently say, don't knock it til you've tried it. No matter what we say, it won't be the same as you actually putting it on.... Go try it on.

·

It will look small on your wrist which is okay if that's what you want but go try it on.

·

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think there are no too small watches for a wrist, only too big watches, If you have a 20 cm wrist and you want to wear a 33mm dress piece I don't see why you couldn't, but a watch with all the lugs hanging from the arm looks just redicoulous

I tried on a few but we were a bit pressed for time unfortunately. I avoided making any purchases of both the intended Watch and any unintended watches for now 😂but after getting it on wrist I really do think this will be my next purchase. It’s stunning and so different from anything else in the collection.
