Seiko GMT not keeping time.

I just got the new Seiko 5GMT. Today is my first day wearing it and I’m noticing that the GMT hand does not keep up and keep accurate time. When the hour turns over I find myself looking and noticing that the GMT hand is still in the last hour , hence the photo that I left for reference am I potentially setting the time wrong? I wouldn’t think so but I’ve never used a GMT movement before now or is this a malfunction with the watch? I purchased this watch from Amazon, but it came in the Seiko box with the warranty card, if the watch is faulty any input on getting Saco to replace this? I was excited as I have a lot of travel coming up in different time zones but the issue that I’m having defeats the entire purpose of this watch.

Every watch I’ve gotten from Amazon had an issue. Sorry about your experience

Not sure if I understood the problem, but the GMT hand is moving with half the speed of the hour hand. The GMT hand covers 24h in one round while the hour hand covers 12 hours 🙂

·

What time zones and time difference are you looking at? I’m reading 2:11 local time but 21:11 on the GMT hand

100% I thought the same thing when I got mine...it keeps perfect time

As others have said the GMT hand goes half the speed of the hour hand. As it stands, the GMT hand is showing 21:11 or 9:11PM, not sure where your second zone is. I’d keep a close eye on it for a while.

Yep it's the 24h on the minute to track to track the 2nd time zone. And you can rotate the bezel as well to track a 3rd timezone but my brain starts to fry at that point. They haven't quite managed a time travel function yet but they're close!

I find this GMT stuff very confusing. But I think I've found a solution.

Wait. I understood it as a GMT watch will track to time zones independently so if the main hour hand is on Eastern standard time, I would set the GMT hour hand for say Pacific standard time. I expected the GMT hand to continue to track PST time is that not how this works?

The GMT hand probably has gap and when you press the crown, the GMT hand moves. I saw this gap in some reviews on YouTube. Have a look in this video below at minute 1’45” when he moves the GMT hand. I suggest you advance the GMT a little so that when you press the crown, it stays in the correct position. I hope that can help.

No, the gmt hand is falling behind. By the time the main hand reaches the next hour, the gmt hand is still in the same hour it was before. For example. Right now my main hand is showing 5:39. The gmt should be 3 hours behind but it’s fallen to Noon pst time. 4 hours behind.

No it should be in PST time. 3 hours behind. It’s now fallen to 4 hours behind.

I want the main to be 12:11 and the gmt should be pst which is 3 hours difference at 9:11pst. Is that not how this works and I’m just confused?

So if it’s a true defect gmt hand should not be moving (not with the speed of hour hand) at all or way behind, when changing hours manually. If so, I would return it.

my sek001 Easter time right now. Look at where the gmt hand must be located, indicating pacific time .

Ok, so set your main time to 12:11...and your GMT hand to "3", which is located between 2 and 4 on the GMT bezel. The GMT hand moves at half speed as your main hand. For example, the main hours hand will travel 2 times around your dial over 24 hours, while your GMT hand will only go around 1 time over 24 hours.

The first day i got this seiko five, same exact model as yours, i also had this problem. All i did was the next turn of the hour, adjust that gmt hand where you want it to be (first pull position of the crown) and it should line up. It may have gotten misaligned gears as of now. Mine has worked ok since then.

You just blew my mind

@SpecKTator is correct. (As always!)

Also, you read the GMT hand against the chapter ring (outside the minute markings on the dial.) It’s calibrated in 24 hrs, like the bezel.

Or, think of the hour hand going around twice a day, first as A.M., then again as P.M. The GMT hand only goes around once in that day and points to a scale from 0 to 24.

Hope that helps.

(Not to overwhelm, but the bezel 24 hr scale can be moved to show another, 3rd, zone. The hour hand is local AM/PM. The GMT points to one time zone on the 24 hr chapter ring and another on the 24 hr bezel, if you want to go to the trouble.)

I’m not ALWAYS right…but I’m never wrong 🤣
