Didn't see your comment, but I also think the Santos is an excellent choice. My wife and I actually share one easily thanks to the strap & bracelet system.
Although it's hard for us watch nerds to do it, I think the reality is that sometimes these heirloom pieces hold the most value because they are/were pieces that you adored and used often before passing them along.
But if you're trying to be considerate of a size or something that might be appropriate for anyone, I would suggestion the Cartier de Santos (medium). Even vintage Cartiers in a small size wear very well on men (I can still see my grandfather wearing his rather small gold Cartier)!
