Feedback Wanted for a new Digital Watch Design

Hey everyone, hope this is the right place but I've been tinkering with a digital watch design, and I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback now I have my first prototype from printed aluminium!

Here's what I'm aiming for:

  • Utilising 3D printing technology the case can be printed and size adjusted to fit any wrist

  • Sleek, minimal, buttonless design that suits everyday wear

  • Easily removable module (accessible through a magnetic back case) where you change the time, plus potentially swap it out to fit in other case designs

If you have a moment, could you please take a look and let me know what you think? Your insights and suggestions would be incredibly valuable in refining this concept.

Thank you so much for your help!

Ben

You made this yourself!? Wow that looks really cool! I particularly like the case design with the rounded edges. Just curious, since the buttons to adjust the watch are located behind the watch, would there be instances where the buttons may be accidentally pressed when worn on the wrist?

·

Interesting in a good way. I am not a fan of tall straight case sides. Were I in charge, I'd probably make the steps shallower and add a hefty external radius on the bezel (which is actually really tricky to do as if it is pure geometric straight line and constant radius, the corners will not blend well as it really needs some transitioning or blending).

Of course this is a statement watch and most people aren't as concerned about them sliding under cuffs as I am. I'd probably scale it down a tad if possible, again my unpopular preference.

Thanks @Robin_npy yes designed myself and then sent of to a manufacturer for 3D printing. I've added a coupe of pics of the watch back. The idea is you would easily remove the case back to access the module to change time etc so you can't accidentally press any buttons. I stole the module from an old casio to in an ideal world the module would be self enclosed, waterproof etc and exchangeble within other watch cases for example.

Cool concept! 3D printing, especially metals, is very expensive and time consuming. The geometry of your case would be much more faster and cheaper to machine. If printing is going to be your main selling point, then take full advantage of the technology and design a case that will be cheaper to print and almost impossible to machine.

Thanks @PoorMansRolex all feedback welcome, I agree to scaling down a bit, I designed it around an old casio module. Ideally the watch would be thinner, currently just over 10mm in height.

Thanks @MKE_MecaMan yes you're right it would be cheaper to machine. My thinking with 3D printing aside from not having higher order qty's is that you could custom size the case to fit different wrist sizes so each one is unique. Do you think that's a key selling point? Thanks

·

I was just about to ask where you bought this. Dude that’s insane and the fact that you made it yourself makes it even cooler 😎✌🏻

Awesome, thanks @h_tudor02 🙂

Super nice! 🤜🤛

Is it possible to have the case in different colors?

If you use recycled aluminum, you'll win shark tanks next season. 🙌🤩

Definitely a selling point. Other than different case sizes, what are you defining as "unique "? Are you looking at some other ways to personalize? Maybe form-fitting the case back and/or shape their wrist? Take full advantage of the technology.

Cool design! Love to see more and more people works on new watches concept!💪🏼

Dimensions?

The final material will be stainless steel?

·

I like the idea but this grainy look of the case is just not doing it for me. If you had mashined it out of a single piece of metal, with nice crisp edges it would look waaay better.

·

It’s cool looking

But when it rains wouldn’t everything just pool on your lcd screen and ruin the electronics eventually

I’ve been thinking that the digital watch space is ripe for a microbrand to come in and shake it up. They’re relatively cheap watches, yet fun. It’s cool to see how much thought you’ve put into redefining how a user should interact with their digital watch.

This particular case design doesn’t speak to me (it gives me vibes of Devo’s hats) but I’m excited about the path you’re on and since you’re 3D printing the cases, the design is almost secondary at this point. Keep going!

·

Nice start! Needs a pop of colour and a bracelet to match. I enjoy the minimalist design.

As someone pointed out, some degree of waterproofness would be needed. As for buttonless design, old LED watches are set by magnets...

·
OldSnafu

Great concept but without any water resistance and it will pick up your cutlery every time your watch passes over them.

ha thanks @OldSnafu this has come up by others, in its current form there is no resistance as I just stole the module from an old casio. Long term goal would be to have a self inclosed module that you could swap out and put into other case designs.

Definitely a cool and interesting design 😎keep designing more watches I’m curious to see what else you come up with 👍🏻

Thanks @liamsaer08 really appreciate it. I have a few more ideas in my head so who knows..

Thanks for the feedback @w_tone yes the water resistance is a common theme to answer.

Thanks @CheapHorologer I totally agree the digital space is ripe for a shake up. Key to this will would be being able to offer a watch at an affordable price point, which is against the current costs of 3D printing. Never heard of Devo's hat but a quick google and I see what you mean ;)

Hey @watchfindsgermany yeah it has a concrete/industrial vibe to the finish. I might prototype a machined case to see. I tend to agree actually, the finish could be improved.

Thanks @PatrickPat its been a labour of love to this point. Current dims are 36x36x10.2mm, but as it utilises 3D printing you could scale that up/down for different wrist sizes. Do you think that is a good selling point? Current material is printed aluminium as I wanted to keep the case as light as possible.

Cheers @MKE_MecaMan I see your point, if going with the tech to really customise to the wearers wrist. By unique that is what I am referring to that the size is modified to fit the wearer.

Thanks @ds1988 that is the beauty of 3D printing you could in theory choose to print in different materials, colour etc this tech is only evolving you can now print wood, brass etc so lots of options in the future I reckon.

@kenbot printing in wood?? 🤯

Unbelievable.

That is the beauty of evolving technology 🙌

Yes it is amazing what you can do @ds1988 , just needs the price to come down for the tech to be widely adopted.
