Solar Watches

Can solar powered watches be marketed as “automatic”? This is as much a question of technicalities and definitions as your gut feeling. Does a quartz-powered “automatic” sit right with you?

The thing is, I believe an “automatic watch” is one that is charged as the user wears it, no battery change or hand winding required. Solar powered quartz watches fit that definition 🤷‍♀️

I’m curious as to where you’ve ever seen a solar powered watch marketed as “automatic”?

No

An automatic is so named because instead of the wearer winding the spring manually to create the power reserve, the movement of the wrist automatically winds the spring.

With quartz there is no spring to be wound...

To be fair, I misunderstood point 1 the first time I read this. When I was first understanding different movements, I thought “solar powered automatic chronograph” was a thing. Now I know it’s not.

Spring drive is an automatic assist quartz movement. Kinetic runs a close path to it too.
