Sub $1,000 Everyday Watch for Pops

My dad's 68th birthday and my goal is to get him a Rolex Explorer for his 70th. For now, I am looking to gift a sub $1k watch for him to enjoy for next 2 years. Looking for everyday watch with automatic movement and max 40mm in size (38mm would be preferable).

Ready, set, GO!

Tough to say. What is his taste? Dive, dress, field, pilots? Many great micros under $1000, or if he wants a lead in to the Explorer, hard to beat a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto.

In the big brands, I would say like my fellow up here.

If you are into Microbrands, for some GADA watches, maybe you can have a look at

Relio Solstice

Lorier watches

Zelos/Axios

Christopher Ward

Wise

You also can have a look at Sinn, little bit more than 1K$ but they seem to be excellent.

3 you mentioned were the top contenders for me! Khaki Field 38 mm  on bracelet, Seiko Baby Alpinist and Tissot Gentleman (also looked at Ballade). I wanted to see if I am overlooking any watches. Seiko 5 GMT sure does look interesting!

More of an casual everyday watch so dress watches would be out but would be open to smaller dive and pilot watches. And agree to agree. Khaki Field Auto 38mm would be a solid choice!

Thanks for your input! Since he will have a Rolex in couple years, it would be cool for him to support and wear a microbrand watch and would be a neat little collection. I am a fan of C.Ward but don't know too much about others. Will definitely check them out!

If we're talking micros, there a lot of interesting options in addition to @Guyllheaume 's suggestions.

Direnzo's pre order for the new DRZ04 Mondial is still open.  The reviews are stellar and the price is great for a Sellita SW-200 Elabore grade movement.  40mm integrated bracelet with a 11mm height and short 46mm lug to lug. 650 CHF or $670ish

Astor and Banks also has the Fortitude Lite which is available in certain colors but also pre order.

38.5mm diameter, 11mm height, 46mm lug to lug, $650

I also love Seiko's Presage Sharp Edge series. 39mm diameter, 11mm height, 47mm LtL ~$1K new but you can probably negotiate that down at any AD.

Also will plug Nodus, particularly their Sector Field.  38mm diameter, 12.5mm height, 47mm LtL, ~$500

Sector Field Marina

You could also outdo @Ichibunz's $50.02 bid in the charity auction I'm running for the San Martin 62Mas Chronograph and have $900+ to buy a watch for yourself. 😜😜😜

But generally a ton of awesome options out there.  More specifics on the type of watch you're looking for could be helpful.
