IWC Appreciation

As you all know by now I am a huge fan of aviation watches. The latest Top Gun Chronos have got me excited, unfortunately 46mm is far too big for me. But I still like to admire them from a far. This is my Dad's IWC. I love the dial and how it contrasts with the numerals. The hands which look they've been taken straight from an air speed indicator from an aircraft. Even the leather strap gives me vibes for WW1, when pilots flew in open cockpits with their big bomber jackets.

Is there any brands that you admire but for whatever reason don't own?

I do agree with you on certain models for sure. The Spitfire is £4,450 and I just think that's a tough bracket to operate in with Seamaster, Explorer among many others. Especially as it's a NATO strap.

A fine looking watch😀

Size has always been the bigger factor holding me back from iwc as well (well, that and not having the money together for any luxury watch).

But I've been looking at some mark xviii's and pilot 36's lately and I'm reconsidering.

I love a lot of IWC watches but agree that they are often just too big for my wrist.

IWC also prices their products a bit high in my opinion for what you get.  Make sure you ask for a discount. I have found the IWC bracelets to be amazing, but they charge some high prices for modified sellita movements and really high prices for their in-house calibers.

I admire Grand Seiko for being quite original with its designs and for innovating, but I just find that I don’t connect with them. They seem a bit cold to me. They are also often too thick and seem to lack lume on watches that are supposed to be for everyday wear. Now that they are increasing their prices, they are also losing some of the competitive edge they had over the Swiss.

I've never been too fussed about lume. Most of my watches are dress watches so never really wanted it. I do agree GS price increase isn't great but I do like the fact they're doing things their own way. Additionally they are very innovative, with spring drive and now constant force tourbillion 🤯

I suppose it comes down to what you consider value, and what aspects you of a watch you value the most?

I’m hoping to go see and try some on in person as I have found that some watches look way better in person. The feel of a watch is critical as well and something you just can’t evaluate by looking at pictures and articles online. I hear criticism of Grand Seiko bracelets and straps online but have never tried them on myself.

I have bought affordable watches online without seeing them in person or trying them on but would hesitate to do so with a luxury watch. However, you basically have to go to a big city to find any of these luxury watches and even then, the AD or boutique may be out of product.

Yeah I could not agree more. In person it's different as well as the fit. Are you looking at  any particular model? When my brother got his snow flake the titanium really threw me. I never expected it to be so light. Not a bad thing just a different experience to the standard steel. But I've never heard of any complaints about the glasps.

Yeah that is a pain I must admit but unfortunately that's where the money tends to conjugate.

I’m intrigued by the SBGW-231 manual wind as well as the SBGW-235.

They are some very nice watches. And they look fantastic, all the best with your search. If you decide to get one please share some pictures 👍
