Dive watch advice

Hi, I have been wanting to buy a dive watch under $1000 and wanted a dial color that pops out (read orange or yellow). After doing fair bit of research and looking at various microbrand options available, zeroed in on 2 options

  1. Doxa sub 200 - this is available now available at a good year end discount with local retail ($820 for beads of rice bracelet version)

  2. Tuseno shellback v2 - they are planning to launch a pre order version this week with pre order price of $599.

Needless to say, tuseno will have me pay a sufficient chunk in customs and will be available only sometime next year.

While I always preferred doxa as the dive heritage brand and the color options it offers, I've recently read some very good reviews for tuseno and the way it plays with light.

Woud appreciate your experience/ opinions

Mark over at Long Island watch has great stuff. Great specs and design for a great price

·

Look at the Henry Archer Nordso. Great watches and great colors. I have a yellow one and love it, especially for the price.

Got to be the Doxa!

Thank you

I would go Doxa between those two. I researched the Doxa Sub 200 quite a bit before because I wanted one too. Some drawbacks I read about was the flat nature of the case, weak lume, and less than premium feel on the bracelet. If you want another option for a fraction of the cost, Nodus is a great brand-

They make really good watches. I have two.

Thanks, so I assume you didn't go for doxa finally.. thanks for the below suggestion. I guess it comes down to movement where doxa is using the ETA movement, nodus uses the Seiko NH35

I didn’t after watching lots of YouTube reviews and reading reviews. I do like a watch that contours the wrist rather than sitting like a pancake. I also have a small wrist so that does not help. Nodus does regulate the movement and their customer service is great too. If you are ever in the market for a yellow watch that is not a diver the Sector Sport is beautiful!

Zodiac

They do colour better than most and are one of the progenitors of the dive watch.

A solid option in ~ $1K tier, particularly if you like your watches with a bit of heritage behind them.

Image

Certina

The DS PH range (... 200, 500 or 1000m) all came with an orange dial.

Again, soild dive watches with a solid history from a solid brand - lots of bang per buck ... but you need some wrist! They tend to wear a little smaller than their specs would indicate but aren't exactly small watches.

Image

It's my opinion that at around $1K you're starting to ease into a price bracket where micro-brands may not offer great value - not to say that there aren't micros that do offer value at / above $1K, obviously.

Good luck and hope you enjoy whatever you choose. ☻

Both are solid options. Certina was on my list but unfortunately doesn't have any retailers here and will have to shell out huge customs ( again thanks to where I'm staying!)

But I totally agree at this price point would love to see some heritage rather than going for micros ( hence had doxa in mind) will check out zodiac and the availability here. Thanks again 😄

Of course, I’ll post the one I have - Scurfa Treasure Seeker: https://www.scurfawatches.com/product/treasure-seeker-orange-dial/

Nodus makes a diver called the Retrospect III with an orange dial. I have one of their Avalon II watches and it’s impeccable. Not just the fit and finish, but the movement is extremely well regulated. https://www.noduswatches.com/retrospect-iii/p/retrospect-iii-flare-orange

You can also pick up a devil diver for pretty cheap these days. Bulova’s design language is pretty similar to the Doxa, I think, and you can snag these on Jomas for just over 400$. https://www.bulova.com/us/en/product/96B350.html?cgid=oceanographer

Between your two original choices, I’d probably go with the Doxa, for all the reasons you listed. I’d be curious to know how the lume performs before buying it, but that might just be me.

Again great suggestion, always out of stock on the website! It says they will restock in December. Probably gets sold out in minutes 😕

+1 for the Bulova Oceanographer aka Devil Diver. I have the Blue dial but only because it came on a metal bracelet and was on sale. The orange one was hard to pass up though. Excellent warranty, heritage, and wears so nicely on the wrist. Happy hunting!

Check out Spinnaker for sure, esp the Hass, Spence 300 or Dumas. Incredible quality for what you pay and they come in bright, fun colors

FWIW-the Diver One tends to sell out in seconds. The Treasure Seeker is usually in stock for much longer. But also not sure when they’ll have what colors next.

Doxa is solid. Just tossing out alternatives. 🤝

DOXA, there is no alternative! 😜🤪

·

I realize that the whole dial isn't the color you're looking for, but you may want to check this one out:

·

Yeah, i’ll pick Doxa
