Every enthusiast should have a pocket watch

I’ve got the pleasure of owning this beautiful piece of history, and it’s made me realize that even though they’re far from practical, I think everyone who is fascinated by watches and their history/creation should own a pocket watch. Not necessarily to use, but to appreciate and enjoy. They’re such an important part of our hobby, and it’s a shame how often they’re overlooked.

I had such a fun journey searching for just the right piece. I wanted something that summarized my taste and love of watches in one piece, and I found that in this gorgeous Zenith. Even though I still use my regular wristwatches, I get a lot of pleasure over simply owning something I feel so connected to. You should definitely look into it if you feel the slightest desire!!

Agree. Great looking piece.

That is a very interesting typeface, and I can't really ascribe it to a certain decade. Any idea of age?

Since there are two photos showing the same time, I have to ask if it runs. Also, got a chain? You don't want to drop these at all.

First of all, I think I saw Al Roker(?) wearing a watch chain in that clip of Larry David smacking Elmo around, so this look mak be coming back, and not just for steampunk and rockabilly or fedora weirdos.

Next, I don't know how lots of watches fit under sleeve cuffs here. Seeing how I have a dinky wrist and most shirts just work with (luckily what I like most anyway) 35 mm quartz or below, I'm left assuming that tool watch people don't wear adult clothing. This is not an issue with a pocket watch! And your shirts will last longer, as the left cuff is always the earliest wear point for me.

You know how people will gripe about smartwatches being unwanted information overload. Surprise, surprise, go back further. A pocket watch makes you deliberately seek the time. There is no "herp derp lemme look at muh watch for no good reason" hooey going on. You act only on necessity. This means less opportunity for distraction and frivolous worry. It truly leads to a more relaxed day.

Did I mention that a bare wrist is the most comfortable wrist? It is. Junkies are in denial but truth be truth.

Thank you! They were the main draw for me

Adding #pocketwatches tag.

I wish there were as many resources as there are for wrist watches. It's hard for me to distinguish quality in modern pocket watches.

Thanks for your comments! The watch runs very smoothly, at around + or - 5 seconds per day. I also have a couple chains for it, I just thought I’d share it nice and plain haha, but I can do a style update sometime!

And thankfully I work in jewelry so I can wear a vest and the pocket watch without looking too much hipster haha

For sure. Thankfully a lot of the details regarding movement quality still transfers over😅 but yeah a lot is just luck

·

Nice, CWC makes a nice one. Out of stock right now though.

I own three pocket watches myself. I do enjoy them although they typically only get use in colder months. Fun fact: the so-called "change pocket" on jeans is actually a pocket watch pocket.

You definitely have a wonderful watch in that one. Great pick up my friend!

I would love G shock to make a pocket watch!!!!🤣

Imagine!! That would be insane 😂and you know it’d have all the bells and whistles too

This is an interesting one. It’s a Ball railroad watch with a Waltham movement from c.1904 and is marked as a “Loaner”, which were watches loaned to railroad staff while they were having their own watches serviced, regulated and/or repaired.

Whoa! That’s a cool history!! And definitely a beautiful piece! That’s a keeper for sure

Here's my collection. The one in the middle is my grandad's Omega.

That’s a cool collection! You’ve got a good variety of shapes and sizes😍

There was a post the other day asking: what watches do you appreciate but don't want to own? It's the same deal here for me. I appreciate pocket watches, the historical relevance and their mechanics, but that doesn't mean I HAVE to one one. I'd still consider myself an enthusiast 😉

Fair fair haha there is no requirement 😂

·

I’ve had a similar zenith yesterday on my hands! I took a picture at the movement coz I found it very appealing!

Image

Whoa!! I really like that movement! I see a lot of similarities to mine! Maybe their from a similar era 🤔

Just one?

Correction: At least one😂

Agree and nice ones can be relatively inexpensive. Great if you love mechanical watches - and a loud tick.

A conversion is a good compromise too but the purists get upset about them. I agree that ruining an intact pocket watch is a shame but many pocket watch cases were scrapped to recover the gold content and saving a perfectly good movement by putting it in a conversion is fine by me, albeit they wear quite large.

Indeed!! I think conversion pieces have a cool history behind them and although I don’t have the wrists, I’m all for it!

It looks like the sort of pseudo Egyptian font that was big in the King Tut boom of the 20s. Kind of like the Grauman's sign.

Image

Interesting!! It’s entirely possible as the watch was made around 1914 and I’m sure the dial has been redone at some point 🤔

·
evanwithfry

That’s cool! What’s the Sony logo for?

I don't know!

It would but it might be too large to fit in your bloody pocket

That’s true haha it’d be the size of a baseball

·

Yep, totally agree!

I am lucky enough to have my Grandfather's pocket watch, circa 1918. Got it running with a service and she is pretty good on the timing!

Awesome piece!
