March 2023 SOTC // "Collection Tiers" // (5 ➡️9) Pausing For A Bit

Here's the current SOTC. When I joined WC earlier this year, I was disciplined and enjoyed a 5 watch collection. Since joining, I've acquired x4 new (to me) pieces. It's the bottom left 4. Y'all are bad influences ;) Luckily they were all cheap and they are deliver a unique experience relative to the $'s spent (AVG price of all 4 landed was $250/ea).

Watch Tiers

Looking at my collection, I noticed something interesting: I put them in three tiers. The sum value of the button row couldn't add up to buy me either watch in the middle row. The sum value of the middle row couldn't add up to buy me the watch in the top row.

Very different price tiers, but I get more than commensurate enjoyment of each.

Rundown of the Watches

(Top to Bottom; Left to Right)

  • Rolex 116000 Oyster Perpetual 36mm, White dial

  • Cartier Tank SolarBeat Large

  • Seiko SLA033

  • Seiko 7002-8040, Lume dial circa 1988 (papers from Morocco)

  • Seiko 7002-8040, White dial, circa 1995 (papers from Malaysia)

  • Seiko x NanoUniverse SUS Reissue

  • Seiko 7009-3110 circa 1994

  • Seiko SKX013 (with modded bezel insert)

  • Seiko SKX007

Position Within Collection

Which watch have I owned the longest? Seiko SKX013

Which watch has had the most wrist time? Depends over which period of time...

Last 30 Days - Seiko 7002-8040 with lume dial.

Last 90 Days - Seiko SUS Reissue

Last 180 Days - Cartier Tank

Last 365 Days - Rolex OP36

Which watches receive the in-person most compliments from non-watch people?

Cartier Tank (very recognizable) and SKX013 (the after market Pepsi bezel gets a lot of questions and compliments)

Which watch has been worn for the most adventures?

Seiko SLA033. I've submitted 14.5K foot mountains, scuba dived, and ran marathons with this watch on and everything in between.

Which watch is my beater watch?

Seiko SKX013... I've worn doing various remodel and construction work.

Which watch am I likely to be wearing any given day? Rolex OP36

Which watch has the best Easter egg / entertaining wow factor?

The 1988 full lumed dial 7002-8040 from Morocco is so heavily worn and patinated... the lume dial is awesome and is very bright in the middle of the night even if it spent the majority of the day under a cuff... not even 100% sure if these we produced in full lume dial from Seiko originally or if they did this afterwards, either way I don't care. It's awesome!

Pausing

I'm pausing the "what's next" to spend some time with what I have. I've been very disciplined over the past 6 years, reducing my collection from >30 at once down to 5. There have been seasons where I've purchased 4 watches in 2 months, but that was many years ago. I need to pause and check myself. That said, I am very happy with the new acquisitions and how they all fit together in the overall collection.

Seven Seikos. A Cartier & a Rolex.

Thanks! The strap is from DeLugs and I'm happy to report that they make custom sizes, as most 19mm lug straps on the tank won't fit my wrist... ordered the exact color, grain, stitching that I liked but in a custom longer length.

They are absolutely the best for straps!

Great collection, thank you for sharing! Love the SUS reissue in particular, considering the moss green for my own collection.

The SUS reissue collection is great. Very light on the wrist and an absolute "palette-cleanser" watch for people who regularly wear heavier automatics, while still possession character, charm, and the utility of a tool watch. It's my go to watch when my power reserves on everything else died overnight.
