Are you a rule follower for watches?

I and have been a rule follower for watches. No leather on divers, field watch dials are black, etc. I'm starting to question that because I recently got a white dialed field watch and I really like. Do you follow the "rules" or do you unapologetically like what you like?

There are no rules.

All that talk is rubbish.

Anyone who doesn't like my tastes in watches can pound sand.

I'd normally say I am pedantic and petty and "rules" are of course norms established by years of experience before us and not to be meddled with lightly.

However, the two examples given are things that I just don't care about one lick. I've worn leather with a diver, just because the things are so darn heavy that fabric doesn't work for me. The main thing I don't like about field watches is the black dial. I really wanted this Japanese variant of a Timex Camper which was just the same plastic cased thing but with a white or cream dial.

But I'd like more rules in most ways. My rules. No watches over 38mm. No sport or tool watches with tailored clothing. No silly bracelets on same wrist as watch. I could rattle off dozens more.

What are being described as "rules" are really more "conventions", and many of them make sense. No leather straps on divers makes perfect sense if you plan to submerge the watch and band. Leather will stretch or worse. Black dials on field watches makes sense if there is a chance that you will receive incoming fire.

These conventions are breaking down because there is very little functional reason to wear a watch. Technology has made divers and pilot watches mostly obsolete. Field watches are now for short hikes on manicured trails. Dress watches are for old men to remember the old ways.

Do we wear white after Labor Day? Yes, the reason for the convention has broken down. Can you get a pumpkin spice latte all year round? Yes, because civilization has become degraded and we are all doomed.

I only follow the rules!  That's the rule!

(They are rules that I create, randomly at a whim, and have no basis in logic 😎)
