Selling watches when you get bored of them…

Hey all, I decided to post my SKX and Citizen diver for sale on my local Craig’s. I find that as times goes on my interest in automatic watches is starting to fade and be replaced by more interesting quartz analog-digital style watches.

This made me think about how people here approach selling watches. I buy and sell guitars quite often. Mostly acoustics. I find it fun to find something for a good deal, play it for a while, and sell. Always buying another model guitar.

How do you all feel about buying and selling watches? When you buy is it “for life”? Or “for as long as I enjoy it”?

So far it’s been like the Hotel California over here in my watch collection.

I feel like I understand exactly what you’re saying. I too bought a 70s timex marlin. Fun little watch but overall nothing special. I have a whole workshop of broken and project watches. Some I regret taking apart but nothing super valuable. But it’s taught me what to look for. I want to find more citizen Promaster watches from the 80s/90s with the goal being a vintage aerochron.

Buying and selling is a side hobby on its own. I am not a watch collector but rather an enthusiast who likes to try new watches and sell/gift the ones that no longer hold my interest.

I don't sell my watches that I get tired of... I am fortunate to have two adult sons that wear analog watches and have given them a few that I no longer wore. As for guitars, I still have my Gibson 335 S Deluxe that I bought new at Guitar Center in 1984 when I was in high school... So I tend to hang in to stuff I like.

I’m a big Gibson guy. Mostly acoustic. I’ve had a Martin d18 and 28 but I always return to Gibson.

I had a Martin 12 string acoustic back in the 90s... Maybe a Shenandoah? I really liked that. I always wanted an Ovation round back because those were the cool guitars in the 80s but never picked one up. I see a lot of parallels between watch collecting and guitars. Especially when it comes to vintage vs new and homages vs real (my first electric was a Cortez Les Paul copy - but once I bought the Gibson I never looked back.)

You’re spot on with the watches and guitars. Even the way the guitar market is crazy right now. Vintage pieces that were a grand a few years ago are like $3k plus!

I sold 3 of my Automatic watches because i fell out of love with them and got tired of winding them every night. I bought a Seiko Speedtimer and I'm much happier now
