So close, but so far. Seiko SRPJ53K Turtle (Limited Ed., Australia)

Guys, I could just about cry in frustration.

  • I adore Seiko.
  • I love the Turtle.
  • I like limited edition watches, especially when numbered.
  • I'm a proud Australian.

So, with all of that in mind, just look at SRPJ53K, designed to have "Australian bush" colours, limited to 1000 and, unusually for a Seiko limited edition, is even numbered on the back /1000. They normally play much looser with numbers on cheaper watches.

But I can't stand the colours. Ugh!

This has to be the most 'so close, but so far' watch I've ever come across. It ticks everything for me, except the colours. I just can't get past them. And it's not like I hate green watches; I have the 2019 Limited JDM Turtle that some refer to as a Hulk. So green? No problem. THIS green with the gradation of green and silver on the dial? Yuck.

So sad.

Sorry to hear that, mate. Next time, perhaps.

I hope so. Alongside this they also did an Australian-centric Sumo, with a blue dial, also limited /1000 pieces, which looks REALLY nice. But it's also essentially double the price, and I've never been so much of a Sumo guy. Now, if the dial from the Sumo was on the Turtle meanwhile... OMG... I'd be over the moon.

Ah...I think you found the reason why Seiko is making the Turtle colourway drab there.

Which is a shame, because Seiko has done some stunning colours on Turtles in the past - even limited edition ones. The Blue Lagoon comes immediately to mind from 2017. The JDM 'Hulk' that I own comes to mind. And others. So it's never been scared of doing great colours on Turtles, but on this one... :(

You could swap out the colors. Seiko modding is a big hobby. But then it's not really a limited edition.

Honestly I don't see the appeal. I'd rather pay less and I don't care how many were produced. I just want high quality, good looks, the features I need and comfort for long term use.

have you seen one in person? I've seen it at mu local AD and I thought it was quite good, albeit it is a lighter shade of green then say the green from alpinists and spb207. might be worth giving it a shot and seeing it in person, sometimes the renders are not always accurate to how they appear in real life

I've taken a look at it in a number of non-Seiko outdoor images, and there's also a great review video of it and the Noosa model where you see it in a lot of different lights, so I feel I have an appreciation for the colour(s), and it just doesn't do it for me :( I wish it did! It ticks so many (other) boxes for me, it's crazy.

Good grief. That's potentially the ugliest Turtle I've ever seen. Wow! 😮
