How to Fall in Love with a Seiko Cocktail Time

Good afternoon all,

I'm rather new to the world of watch collecting and admiration. It was the start of the pandemic that found me searching for a new hobby and watches became my everyday stress relieving joy. It's a beautiful thing.

In the last two years, my own collecting has been in the sub $500.00 category of which there are many lovely pieces (Casio A-1000 series, World Timers and vintage pieces from flea markets and Ebay), but in my opinion, none more striking than this Seiko Cocktail Time "Blue Moon." It fascinated me from the moment I saw it online, and remained whispering every time I would consider another purchase. Unable to see the model in person, I couldn't bring myself to order it in the off chance that it disappointed.

Six months ago, when restrictions were lifting, I visited David Jewellery and Watch Co. without knowing what they carry (other than plenty of Seikos). And there it was, staring at me from under the glass with its beautiful blue eye. My wallet was out of my pocket before I knew my hand had moved.

It's a stunner. The way light interacts with the dial creates multiple shades of blue depending on your surroundings. It can appear almost black when inside, and hit a bright cerulean blue in direct sunlight. The polished indicies are perfect for legibility, and the oversized crown is a fun touch and very smooth in operation.

So, how does one fall in love with a Seiko Cocktail Time?

See one with your own eyes.

P.S. It originally comes on a very nice bracelet, but I'm a strap guy, so I found this gorgeous Bologna (20–16mm) from Colareb which enhances the blue dial beautifully.

Seiko is something else in terms of their dial patterns. I myself is in lust with the porcelein/enamel dials as of late. Cocktails yes please, I’ll have another…

Nice!

I held both the blue and red versions of this Seiko. The red was out of this world. If you haven't seen that one, check it out. That Mido is on my wish list. It is undeniably beautiful.

Duuuuuuude!! You been looking into my wishlist 😉. my AD and I were discussing this watch last week hes telling me he can’t even get this watch to order someone has to purchase it first!! ( might be just a sale pitch) but the gold-mak‘e it think it’s called on the 12 hour marker is just pure class in my opinion. The seikosha numerals too is just plain classic! Sorry I’m just geeking out about this watch, I’m even tempted to trade in my Tudor bb for this…maybe lol

If you can get your hands on this, trade in all the Tudors for it.

Wow!

I've always loved the Cocktail Time dials, I just wish Seiko would make them in a 38mm size! The 40.5mm is really just too big for my wrist and I think a bit too oversized for a dress watch. Being all dial with a thin bezel makes it wear large.

I do own, and happily wear the newer 38mm Presage ref SRPE45 with that gorgeous green dial. Maybe I will try the ladies size Cocktail Time one day.

That being said, the darker blue dial is just stunning!!!

Here is a cocktail - Negroni - SRPE41, in red dial.  I got it 6 weeks ago, and got a BB58 4 days later.  I wear the Negroni everyday for a few hours to enjoy the dial.

I think there is green dial and a blue dial in 38 mm as well. Attached is the link for the blue dial.

The red "negroni" dial is gorgeous; especially with the contrast of the silver numerals!

If you can find the red dial "Kir Royal" it might be just what you're looking for.  It's a smaller dial (34mm) but is just as stunning as the Blue Moon, and I'd say, a less common look with the red dial vs blue.  We have the "Negroni" as well, but I have to say both my wife and I both defer to the Kir Royal.

The Cocktail Time series was the push over the edge of the cliff for me in my watch collecting journey.  I was sold after just seeing pictures online.  And after buying one, and seeing that these watches were even more beautiful IRL than the photos showed, I dove in and bought several others without any worry of being disappointed.

I will say though, that I deferred on the "Skydiving" model after reading a few reviews that said that dial did not live up to the photos.  There are plenty of uploaded wristshots of it and you could make an informed decision on the dial from them.

Watch photography do’s #497:

always have a big pebble to hand, the smoother the better, for those earthy indoor shots where you want to show it can go outside, but don’t  want to go outside.

The 40.5 was a concern for me as well as I have a wrist size somewhere between 6.5 and 6.75 in. It looked quite large in all the photos, but in actuality, it wears quite well. Doesn't strike me as being too large at all, but right at the acceptable edge. That being said, 38mm is perfection. I tried on the Negroni dial, which is 38mm and it is the absolute best size for my wrist, and that sunflower pattern pops!

That red dial is truly stunning!! I especially love the ring of printed dots around the dial. It looks a bit like a Patek Calatrava.

Beautiful watch- dial design/color/texture treatments have such an impact on the look and feel!

Four years after being an early adopter of  the e-watch, I got finally got tired of the information overload when all I wanted to know was what time it was. I caught some videos of Curt over @minitwatch and I decided to go automatic  starting with the Seiko Black Sea Urchin followed in quick succession with a SNKE51K1 and this SRPB46 all within a three week period in 2018. I know... I fell for Seiko HARD.

Here is my Seiko Cocktail Manhattan along side its namesake, a High West Double Rye Manhattan with a Housemade Brandied Cherry. She's become my "date night" watch.
