Omega Speedmaster: I said I'd never do it but look at me now

I've always said here that I don't like chronographs because of how busy they make the dial look and I'm all about the dial. But I also said that if I ever were to get a chronograph it would have to be the Speedmaster because I'm a self-confessed Omega nut and the idea of owning the moonwatch is, well, not entirely unattractive.

Now, I've written about my collection theme before. And I said that I'm actually only missing one item to complete my collection. See, I had tried to collect 1 watch per decade from the 1920s to the present. I would love to have a collection that's horologically significant but what I ended up with were mostly dress watches. I had written before that that one missing item was a watch from the 90s.

Well, look. Here it is: a Speedmaster Automatic from 1998. This is more appropriate and serendipitous than one might think. See, my 70s to the noughts are all Omegas, a sort of sub-collection of the core collection if you will.

70s, I've got my birthyear gold-filled Omega Seamaster:

The 80s, an Omega Seamaster 200M quartz (what it being the 80s I thought a quartz would be a nice nod to the watch-industry-disrupting battery-powered engine):

And I have the Omega Seamaster Professional 300M from the 2000s:

It probably would've made more sense to do a Seamaster for the 90s to go with the Omega Seamaster sub-theme of the 1-watch-per-decade overall theme. However, the second I saw this Speedmaster and its gorgeous dial and perfect-for-my-wrist 39mm case, what can I say? I got hooked.

Image

I mean, look at it. It's a gorgeous watch. A bit more expensive that what I had hoped my 1990s watch would be but, heck, why not? I don't need to tell you what the Speedmaster is all about. I will say this, the other attraction to this piece is its all-white color scheme. As much as I like the look of the standard moonwatch with its black dial, I didn't necessarily want what a lot of people already have. I would've loved a Snoopy moonwatch but I'm not made of money. This white dial with all its quirks is, I believe, just great and perfect.

So, now my collection is complete. It is done. After this, it will have to be strictly 1 watch in, 1 watch out. And if I get another watch it needs to be an upgrade over what I already have. Hoping I can stick to that conviction.

Okay, I already broke that conviction since this isn't the only watch I bought today. I also got a JLC art deco watch from the 1940s, which is probably a bad decision since I already have a JLC watch from the 1940s. More on that in the next NWA.

If I seemed a bit incoherent or if my grammar is a bit sloppy, you're going to have to be magnanimous towards me. I'm writing this while drunk. It's also my and my girlfriend's 8th year anniversary so I did a bit of drinking. Not usually a drinker but, for today, why not?

That's it. Another NWA coming in the next couple of days. Now I need to pass out.

I love it. I still don't like chronographs but the Speedmaster changed my mind about owning one.
