Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

My dad collected watches, so I was interested from early on. The first watches I had were Swatches though. My first proper one I bought with money I had earned working in a garden for a week.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

The very first watch I owned was extremely basic, without any jewels in the movement, golden dial, as far as I remember.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

When looking for a watch, determine what you want it to do for you. Check your wrist size to avoid getting a watch that looks to big (watch diameters are relative, also check the lug to lug. Square watches wear bigger in general). If you want an allrounder, then 100m waterproof is a good choice. 30m only means splash proof and is not suited for taking a shower. If the watch has a screw down crown, always remember to close it after winding. You will be getting more watch for your money buying secondhand. Buy the seller. Ask for more photos, ask questions like: are you the first owner, has it had a service, does it keep the time. Any warranty left? When choosing a watch brand, look off the beaten track. In house movements are nice, but more expensive to service. ETA/Sellita movements can be serviced by any watchmaker. Vintage watches (meaning 70s and older): they might come at a good price, but keep the servicing cost in mind. As with anything vintage – bicycles, motorcycles, cars – parts are rare and very expensive.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Cartier and Jaeger LeCoultre – but also the first watches by Chronoswiss with the Unitas movement.
