Early 90s Tag Heuer 1500

Granite dial,  approximately 39mm, reference 959.706G. Ronda quartz is keeping fantastic time after 3 decades!

Yes yes. I would like a granite dial one to go with my 1500, but it’s not urgent.

Nice! That’s the exact Obama watch right?

Yes - he doesn’t know its missing 🤫

(I didn’t know that when I got it btw)

·

Haha he’s probably gotten a new watch

·

Love it. I have a first gen F1 that went with me to the Gulf War '93. Still wear it today as a beater. The tritium is well beyond its half life, and it's not on it's original strap. But what a trooper...reliable and durable.

·

Damn, Tag was making great watches back then weren’t they? I remember paying $400 for mine which seemed like a lot at the time but 30 years later it’s still here and reliable.

I’m a sucker for 80s / 90s quartz Tags. I think the only one I’m missing a picture of is my full size steel/gold 3000 from this lot. Yes - that is a mid and full size grey 2000 “concrete” dials. I have problems.

I love the asthetic of this era of Tag. I would love another in place of the two chronographs I let go to help finance another watch a few years ago.

This little one will never leave me intentionally though. To many memories invested in this one.

·

WOW. They’re all in good shape too! The chrono has a complicated mechanical/quartz hybrid I’ve read.

It still looks good and you really can’t get anything like it today. Extremely comfortable bracelet too.

The first gen F1 chrono had a Ronda movement which is not great at standing the test of time. The second revision of the series 1 (of which my blue one is part of) has the ETA which is much more reliable.

The original F1 is a genuinely awesome little watch. Mine is battered, and still runs like the day it was born - I love it.

A series 1 rev2 or series 2 sit at around 36mm minus the crown, but they are really nice to wear.

I have this series 3 from around ‘04(?), they were using Kimi to push them onto us meer mortals, and it’s ok. It’s not my favourite, and it sits around 40mm, so it gets much less wrist time than the others.

That granite face is something I personally haven't seen and found really interesting. Suits the watch 👍 looks great as well.

Thanks a lot! I don’t think Tag Heuer ever used it again after the 1500. It really does look good in the light.

I have a basic Tag Heuer 4000 that I received a little over a year ago from my mother. It was in a box of watches that she had stored that she never touched. I have really fallen in love with it's size and fit on my wrist.

I started looking for two-toned examples online. Looking to get it relatively cheap as I think these watches are great for matching with clothing. Great brand, well built, and fits me well.

I love your Tag Heuer. The grey textured dial is beautiful, and the bracelet looks comfortable. I would buy it in a heartbeat if the price was right haha

I just looked up the 4000, that’s when they moved the logo to the top of the bezel, very cool!

Thanks very much! Believe it or not, 1500s in good shape are going for about twice what they were originally, and they’re tough to find in good shape. I know you can send vintage Tags to Switzerland for restoration, which I plan on doing eventually. Oris posts videos of their restoration jobs and it’s pretty incredible what they can do.

The bracelet IS so comfortable.

It really is a comfortable watch your absolutely right.

I did cheat  a little bit because it was really worn out and scratches all over the glass. I was lucky enough to be working in a position where I got access to Tags repair shop at really good prices, so it got a proper service new crystal and a brand new bezel. Which they told me I was very lucky to get as they could only find one in their parts bin at the time. They are only plastic bezels so wear out quite easily. It needs a bit more wrist time tbh.

Ah you were lucky 🍀 Someday I’ll send mine to Tag Heuer for a restoration to see what they can do.

I had to look up Kimi, I know the name of course but it was not easy back then to watch Formula 1 in the States! Back then only with a satellite dish probably?

My father picked up an automatic 4000 last year and he wears it a lot. He wanted something a bit more casual.

I prefer the quartz because all the indices have metal outlines, whereas the automatics don’t and the contrast is a little off. His logo still has some enamel, but the lume on the bezel has long disappeared. Still a very handsome watch.

As long as this has devolved into an F1 slobberfest, here's my down-ranger...

·

Love it! I really think these TAGs are underrated. They're a great grab-and-go watch.

Image
·

Haha there’s a lotta slobber love for them apparently. Probably because they’re still ticking away like an old Volvo.
Feels like affection is building for old Swiss quartz watches, maybe because the valuations of mechanicals has gone bonkers?

Beautiful condition and nice photo too!

The Grey NATO podcast this week is about quartz and grab-and-go was one of their favorite things about them. I enjoy their podcast.

Yes very true, and the are really cool .

My dad rocked this Tag in the 90’s and it still works great today! 34mm is a bit small for me but I’ll still wear it every now and then.

Image
·

Wow that's some 90s bling! Looks like it's in very good shape for its age, enjoy it!

It's amazing how many from back then are still in use.

I have the full size of this - it gets serious attention. One of my favourite watches.

Unfortunately this is the “mid-size” model. 34mm is too small for me so this only comes out of the box during threads like this.😬
