Only on the giant heavy dive watch do I actually value the dinky portion of the strap. Moreso because it seems to add rigidity than any other neuroses.
Give some Perlon straps a try. Theyโre super cheap and the infinite adjustment of the weave pattern is fantastic. Theyโre also super custom if you like a long tail or short tail after the buckle.

The usual answer for questions like this.
It depends on the watch.
I commonly cut off the extra piece on a NATO and seal it with a lighter and make my own single pass. I think I only have 2 I haven't done that to.
I cut mine. I feel it makes for a cleaner look.

Single pass ftw club here.
Extra piece isn't needed these days with the massive availability of correct lug width straps, YMMV.
Are single passes less secure than traditional natos?

There are diverse ways to wear a nato with ONE pass without cut It...
Cutting them is sacreligeous!! ๐
Most important thing for me on any NATO is it MUST be mil-spec, IE have a sewn in buckle, otherwise it's just a cloth strap. ๐
