Return this Universal Geneve or Keep at Risk

Dilemma: I just got this Universal Geneve Unisonic and it’s not running. The seller is incredible and immediate offered a full refund *or* generously offered me a discount I didn’t even ask for to keep it. This has a modified Bulova Accutron movement circa 1972, notoriously hard to repair and could require a new donor movement.

Do I return this and put the money towards a modern functional watch or keep it and hope it just needs a new battery?

I'd return it.

What you do, I suspect, will have a lot more to do with what you haven't said. How long you've been looking for one, what kind of deal you got, if there's an emotional connection to that model, etc.

I wish you luck in your decision.

On the nose 🫠 I’ve been looking for a smaller white dialed dressier watch AND an Accutron for a while. I always loved Universal Geneve and this did both at a reasonable cost (if it were running which it was). I love everything about it except, you know, it’s only right twice a day.

I cannot find any reason to keep this watch from what you have posted. Not running upon delivery . Hard to repair movement that is 50 years old. Just why??? Am I missing something??

If you want a watch like this, you'll be seeking and befriending a specialist repair shop sooner or later anyway. If you want this watch or anything mechanically similar, keep it. If you have cold feet, return.

When you put it like that… 🫠 It’s definitely the rational decision and the way I’m leaning.

Really depends on the discount. A local repair shop quoted me $400 minimum for a quartz to quartz movement swap. You can just replace the entire movement if a repair isn’t possible.

I’d just return it personally.

Get rid… movement is the red flag

Return it.

Got an Omega with similar movement, only option is a new modern movement.. .

I’m rational, very much so, with watch collecting. I had very rational set of objectives when I set out the parameters of my primary collection, and am still completely satisfied with my watches without ever trading or selling any of the primary collection. I think rationality in watch collecting is extremely important to reach satisfying ends. Accepting a watch that isn’t working upon delivery brings a problem into your collection rather than a solution.

That would depend on how much you paid and what discount was offered, I would probably return it but I'm not a gambling man.
