Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

In 2016, I lost the only watch I had at the time. It was a Boss watch that had been gifted to me, so I felt incredibly guilty. I left it behind me whilst going through Glasgow airport. I only remembered when I was already home and could picture it in the very security scanner tray I’d forgotten. My partner replaced it the following birthday with a black Timex that looked exactly the same (what a sweetheart!) The brand name sounded familiar and I started looking them up online, branching out into more general watch content as I browsed brand websites. After getting deep into online watch content on YouTube and Hodinkee, I was bitten by the mechanical bug. A few watches later, combined with a membership to a watch collecting club, and I’m full on obsessed. I go to watch events in person pretty frequently in London and I’m always happy to meet other enthusiasts! If curiosity and carelessness got me into watches, sharing watches with others is what keeps me into watches.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

A long lost Seiko 5.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

My Christopher Ward Trident. I was searching eBay for used examples and my budget was low. I found a quartz Trident (not even realising at the time what the difference between mechanical and quartz was!) and pulled the trigger. My phone goes five minutes later, “Is this John?” “Uh…yeah?” “Yeah it’s Chris, the owner of your gym! Pop round this evening and it’ll be there after your workout. Saves me posting it and you waiting!” London is a city of millions, yet watches made it so much smaller!

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

You don’t need to buy anything in a hurry, but you should try everything on. In person events and calling in store has made me find watches that fit me like a glove that I’d never considered. Equally, watches I thought I wanted, in person just weren’t lighting a fire for me or looked comically large. Spend some time hands on before you commit to a purchase.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Cartier with their privé collection, though it’s so far off for me! Christopher Ward, I’m a big fan of how they’re offering watches across different sizes, but with equal movements and materials. Tudor I’m a big fan of, but it’s impressive to see them throwing METAS movements into the mix!

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

If I could choose only one then probably a black Patek Philippe Aquanaut travel time. I couldn’t stick to one though. I’d want a platinum Cartier Crash with an emerald cabochon, a Patek Philippe 6119G, a Cartier Tank Louis in yellow gold and a Rolex Explorer. Can I have all of those?
