Me back then: Rolex Datejust - My only watch

When I, in mature age, decided that it was time to own one nice watch this was the one I ended up with. A pre-owned Datejust 16220. This was the only watch I would ever need (yeah right)

When I had taken the decision that Rolex Datejust was the watch for my only luxuary purchase I started my further research. Silver dial was given. It was IMO the most versatile. A brand new was too expensive so I went the pre-owned route. The silver dialed was the most common variation so for me, new into the watch world, it was overwhelming to get the grip all the options.

The end choise was the result of following decisions:

Engine turn bezel (to dress down the watch a notch)

Rail tracked chapter ring

”Crisp” indices

Oyster bracelet (to dress down the watch a notch)

As new as I could afford/willing to spend.

As it turned out it didn’t become my only watch. If today me should choose my first/only luxuary timepiece the result would most probably be different. I however appreciate my then me for doing a proper research before pulling the trigger.

Your guess is as good as mine. I don’t know. My purchase was a couple of years ago. To my understanding they have at least kept the value. I don’t remember to what extent value retention was part of the decisionmaking but I’m sure it was part of it. Silver DJ was also the model with biggest supply to chose from.

There is something about the DJ, for me it was never a first choice, something else was always "cooler" more rugged, classy, desirable. But when I finally got one, I got it. It's all of these things in enough measure that it's not missing anything. Timeless design, comfort, style and toughness. It's a true Gada watch. I think that's it's power, when I wear mine I often wonder why I need all the others.

I adore the old DJ's and yours is gorgeous.

I had 2 and will most likely have another

smooth bezel blue dial and an engine turned silver dial

Love the bezel, silver dial, and that strap.

It was a well thought out purchase of a well designed and manufactured watch.  It is really a beautiful piece.

When the air raid sirens go off and you only have time to grab one watch that should be the one. (Some places have tornado sirens, others have tsunami sirens. Insert "emergency situation" where appropriate.)

I guess a GADA, even if I didn’t know the term at the time, was what I where looking for. Could act as dress watch without being one. It certainly holds it’s position as a possible one watch alternative.

That’s another remarcable thing about the DJ. With a handful bezels, different indices and large variaty of dials there is uncountable variations of DJ out there.

I think you have the perfect high/low in this. I just shared it with my wife to inspire her for future gifts...

My first Rolex, like you, was pre-owned - Rolex DJ from 1970. I think it's holding up quite nicely, augmented with a new leather strap by Everest.

That is a really beautiful DJ. That blue fading out to black (or dark blue?) combined with gold bezel and indicis is👌
