Greatest Seiko of All time?! The Sarb017

In my honest opinion is the Seiko Alpinist Sarb017 on of the most iconic Seikos ever produced! Together with an Aftermarket Two tone Jubilee bracelet, it becomes the ulitimate Universal Watch. Sporty, Dressy... perfekt!

Alpinist is definitely a contender for the crown. I would offer the SKX007 might be worthy as well for all situations and just as iconic. Often imitated, never duplicated.

Would be inclined to agree with all of you but I love my Seiko Samurai far too much.

I love my Alpinist, I have the newer Prospex green dial one on an Uncle straps BOR bracelet. I also love my Flighty, and my vintage 6139 6002 Cevert. But the most iconic I would probably say is either the SKX013, the OG Willard, or the 62MAS. It's one of those, and I'm leaning towards Willard.

If it were larger (diameter) and thinner it would be in my box.

Looks good, tho!

The greatest Seiko of all time is my big 41mm NeoClassic Quartz. It's the SGEH49P2. It's like a bigger bolder version of a SARB033. Absolutely beautiful black dial. Applied indices and logo. Sapphire, 100m. Subtly distinctive case design. Date complication and long lasting lume. And it has the 7N42 quartz movement featuring crazy accuracy, steady and precise second hand, and two-second warning when the battery's getting low. It gives you a couple of weeks to change it. Its battery is readily available, costs a dollar, and lasts three years. This watch came with a good looking printed brown strap, but looks great on a wide variety of other ones. It's so perfect, it even has endearing quirks. It has two lumpy crown guards that are there for no reason, and the weird-looking second hand, despite its accuracy, reminds me of a long-necked bird bending down to get a drink out of a stream. The price for all this? $95.00.

There's something about any Seiko with an SGE prefix. They have great performance and appearance, but I have never read a single comment about any of them. Maybe it's because they're quartz, or they just got lost in the shuffle of so many Seiko models. I also have the SGEH79P1 with a white dial. It cost sixty dollars. It has a textured dial, all applied beautifully polished indices, and domed crystal. It's not exactly a Grand Seiko Snowflake, but it's not exactly not. And the $95 Seiko SGEG97P1 looks like a working man's Breguet.

I sold my SARB017 to help fund another watch and actually made 30% on top when I sold it , perfectly solid good watch and very comfortable.

Just my stream of consciousness rambling incoherently here...The SKX007 with all its quirks, no other watch, Seiko or otherwise, has more options for modding. Its the VW Bug of watch platforms. But the Alpinist has a Grand Seiko-like quality to it. It's more refined than one expects at its price point. So I'm conflicted.

Back to square one, then. What would be the criteria to judge the Iconic Seiko? Popularity, reputation, sales? Digital vs Analog? Mech vs Quartz? From my perspective, the first watch that enters my mind when thinking of The (iconic) Seiko, that is, "Plato's Form of the Seiko", 😜 is a late 70's quartz LCD Alarm Chrono, because thats what I gravitated to initially. Then, I discovered their quartz analogs, then the 5 Series, and later the divers.

But for you, my friends, yours may be different...🍻

So lets see... Iconic for WatchCrunchies, or cast a wider net and say Iconic in the eyes of the gen pop? Decisions, decisions.

OK, lets settle this, time to craft a poll! 🤝
