THE RABBIT HOLE

There's nearly always a watch that started each of us down the rabbit hole.  For me, it's a tough choice between the Seiko SKX007 and this Seiko 5.

The Seiko SNK809. This is the first watch I took apart and modded. While taking it apart and under a magnifying loupe, I learned about such things as 'lever escapement', 'balance wheel', 'hair spring' and motion works. These are the things that are present in almost every mechanical watch, from a £50 Seiko5 to a £80,000 Patek Philippe.  In fact, even Patek don't have something these Seiko 5s have....a 'magic lever' automatic winding mechanism that winds the watch when the weighted rotor moves in either direction without the addition of reversing gears. This new world I discovered was mesmerising.  I also found that I could take an inexpensive watch and make an individual statement with it.  Yes, it is not an original design but (based on a cockpit clock) it is still the most instantly legible watch I own.  It is no coincidence that Sinn, Bell & Ross and others have copied this aeronautical cockpit clock design. This one has hands and dial from Harold Ng aka yobokies and I still wear it regularly approximately 9 years on.

Cool. Similar mod with SKX and smooth bezel. Can't keep them all
