What constitutes as a tool watch?

I’ve heard people call the Rolex explorer 1 a tool watch. I’ve also heard other invidials say that the seamaster 300 is a tool watch. One is a simple yet iconic 3 hander and the other is suited for the depths. In your opinion does a tool watch need to do something extra (have a bezel or compass) to qualify as a tool watch? Or simply using any time piece in any situation make it a tool?

Keep in mind, this is not to start an argument. This is just to hear what all you wonderful watch enthusiast have to say.

C- Only tools wear them 😉

A tool watch is any watch designed to do a specific job. Fliegers / field watches are tool watches for pilots and soldiers. Divers are tool watches for divers, etc

I think the phrase means different things to different people, so has become somewhat meaningless, like GADA or grail.

Any watch you wear during a job.

  • Divers for the office (fidget spinner - no pro diver ever wears a conventional sub, Omega or any derivative)

  • Chrono for the office (to time anything)

  • Dress watch for the office (because sometimes you want to dress up)

  • Moonphase for the office (obviously because you want to track the tides)

  • Pilot/field for the office (easy to read and negates the need to put on your ready glasses to see the time

  • GMT for the office(s) allows travel between office and shows everyone how connected you are to the other office

  • Smart watches for the office (for those that like to be CONNECTED AT ALL TIMES so it alarms every 2 seconds when an email comes in)
