Finally, a Seiko!

My giddy fling with watches started not even half a year ago--so though it's not actually shocking that I hadn't added a Seiko to the collection until now, given the brand's outsize presence in the industry and in conversations around these parts, it feels like something that ought to have happened earlier.

This particular piece was an eBay acquisition chosen because I wanted a birth year watch and a kanji day wheel, and this scratched both those itches for one very manageable price. It's a humble Type II quartz from 1977, almost too ordinary to merit comment. But I think it's rather handsome in a classic, non-ostentatious way. With its slender stick indices and near-white silver dial, it looks elegant enough to feel polite at just about any function that a lowbrow character like myself might realistically expect an invitation to, while being so obviously not a dress watch that it won't feel out of place in any of my actual lowbrow daily ensembles.

It's a little dinged up, but overall in far better shape than I am at the very same age. The bracelet is not original to the watch, but is akin to what I assume the original to have been: Japanese, folded-link and stamped-clasp, mediocre--but able to be sized quite ideally for my 6.5" wrist, and overall not at all uncomfortable, especially as part of such a lightweight assemblage. Though some primitive part of my brain keeps grunting and insisting that more watch equals more man, my higher functions can recognize that 36mm is actually a rather nice size for that same svelte wrist of mine.

All in all, I'm pleased as punch with this addition to the collection, and expect it--unlike my purely nostalgic, just-for-display previous eBay purchase--to become a staple of the regular-wear rotation.

I strongly disagree, in a friendly manner 😎 I think this design is super elegant, and very classy. ALSO: It's not only from your birth year (1977) but that is also the year that the first-ever Star Wars movie (A New Hope) hit the big screen! 😎 (If you're a Star Wars fan, 1977 is an important year. A rare vintage, if you will.)

Well observed! Star Wars is my earliest movie memory, as it happens; I saw it well before anyone thought to call it "A New Hope," and have never altogether lost my love for the franchise. I used to work for a company that had a Lucasfilm license to publish interpretive "fine art" pieces, so Star Wars has even been a not-insignificant part of my livelihood!

Great find! The movements in these Type II watches are very reliable and designed to be easily serviceable. I had mine overhauled in an hour and it runs perfectly again. Definitely a no-brainer to add one to the collection to represent the quartz crisis era.
