I think solar watches are great and if youโre just wanting to dip your toe Iโd take a look at Citizenโs Ecodrive watches as they have such a large range.
One thing to bear in mind is that a solar powered watch does not necessarily mean youโll never need to open it up as things can still wear out, but you should be good for a longer time than with a regular quartz watch.
Any preference in type?, Field, diver, dress?, there is a solar or Eco-drive in pretty much all genre, the best I have owned where the Ray Mears Citizen Eco-drive watches, sapphire lenses, screw-crown, monocoque solid case backs, not cheap but very solid watches.

These are my two solar watches. Very different propositions but awesome all the same. I think the Citizen wins for me as itโs more โthe classic diverโ vibeโฆ.. either of these would make my โArmageddonโ listโฆ.
For under 42mm hard to beat these Citizen Promaster Tough models, aka the "Ray Mears".
Model number is BN0118-55E I believe. The slightly older model, which you can get new in the UK, or used online is a perfect smaller field watch.
Monobloc design, 300m WR, very legible and lume is ๐๐ป.
I'd also look at Vaer. I believe their solar diver is 39.
Pics of the Citizen, don't own a Vaer.
The citizen eco-drive ref. AQ4091-56A.
Stunning japanese paper dial comparable to snowflake.

Good question.
I will look for some chrono or casual watch. I have too much divers ๐
As mentioned above, Solar or Eco-drives are fine but personally I have more faith now-days in a decent quartz battery powered watch regarding longevity time keeping and ease of maintenance, just my feelings but solar watches are not maintenance free for ever, check out Baltany if you want a good quartz or chronograph.
