Beginner looking for advice

Hello everyone,

I found this watch for a bit more than 100€ but I can not find anything about it online. I am a beginner and I do not know where to search, maybe I struggle because it is not distributed anymore or something... Anyway, do you think it is a real Seiko? And do you think it would be a good first watch to get?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Its weird. It looks like a "mod" watch. All the text apart from Seiko belongs on a Rolex. The movement looks to me to be a Chinese automatic. Probably best to avoid this one, imo.

Thank you sir for taking the time to analyze and answer. I discussed this point with the seller and he confirmed it is a mod. I did not know about mod watches tbh.

I suppose Chinese automatic movement is cheap quality and not so much reliable?

And also, from pictures the mod seems to be well done but it does not mean I will not have any bad surprises?

If the buyer listed the watch as a Seiko, they're not being truthful. The movement will be cheap, unregulated and poorly oiled, if at all. If you like the watch enough to buy it, offer around €40. If not, walk away. There are much better options available.

Yeah, I'd have a hard time calling this anything short of intentionally misleading, so I would wager it is worse in every way than they say it is. I'd honestly be concerned about my money being stolen, but I don't know why they'd make a noticeably modified watch the subject of an outright scam if they never intend to ship anything at all. If you want to try to make an offer for really cheap, that's fine. I just wouldn't give them what they ask for because someone selling that is definitely vastly overpricing it.

My bad, it was written in the description to be a mod, I did not know about mod watches and did not pay attention at first, the seller seems honest as he has good reviews for other product he sold (not watches though). Sorry if I you lost time because of my lack of knowledge...

The seller not being misleading, I guess the price is therefor correct right?

OK, looking at it purely as a self assembled watch, all of the parts were most likely bought on AliExpress possibly for around €100. The seller may be adding a little extra on top for the time it took to assemble. If you are happy to pay the asking price, go ahead. I personally would bid under to see if you could come to an agreement.

Thanks a lot for your help sir ! I will follow your advices and see how it goes. Have a nice day!

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a correct price, but I'm less inclined to think it's outright robbery. If you really like the way it looks, then you can make whatever offer you're comfortable with.

However, for a first watch, I don't think I'd recommend it, unless perhaps you're interested in modding. There's no real way to know if the person who modded that didn't mess up seals, drop something in the movement, apply the text poorly, use an ill-fitting crystal, etc. It's also a little on the nose to have all that Rolex specific text under a seiko name, for my tastes. I think you're more likely to have a good first experience with mechanical watches from a big brand, not something a modder threw together and is trying to sell for one reason or another.

·

Yeah, probably not a good starter watch. Looks like a a typical explorer style case and bracelet, an NH35, and a slightly humorous dial. Nothing wrong with it, but the issue is you don't know who put this together. In the worst case a modder is just getting rid of all his problem parts that way. It's a watch I would only buy from someone I trust.

Lmao, that's a dastardly hypothetical plot that I hadn't thought of. Just chuck all the dud and damaged parts into one watch and sell it as a lemonâ¿.

Oh, weird. On my device, the superscript I used to write "Lemon" to the nth power just turns into gibberish after I post it.

Is the seller located in India?

Could be a Mumbai special.

No he is from France, he mostly sells clothes and has an average grade of 4.7/5 stars with more than 60 reviews so I doubt he is a scammer

·

I think its a basic Seiko 5 movement, but “superlative “ on the dial ????

·

Welcome to WC…that’s a “mod” watch. Nothing wrong with it, probably has a genuine Seiko movement in it…a lot of us here “mod” (modify) watches. There is a whole world of modding (ie you can buy a case, dial, hands, movement, crown, crystal, etc. and “create” your own thing).

With that said, “Datejust” is a Rolex trademark, so sometimes modders get a little carried away ;)

Thanks for the welcoming and taking the time to tell me more about modding, it being a mod is not such an issue for me but the fact that there is a mismatch with a Rolex trademark and also that I am unsure that the seller (he told me he assembled it) is skilled enough makes me want to keep looking 😉

·

You won’t find it online since this watch is modded beyond recognition

Hello again everyone, fyi I digged a bit more and it seems that the seller bought a similar product to this one (around 37€ on Pandabuy and this one of the most expensive model) and added the Seiko logo and (maybe) the datejust. It make more sense now, I think he did not want to add a Rolex logo to avoid being accused of counterfeiting... Definitely a big pass for me.

Thanks for helping out a beginner!
