Jump hour function and the loss of a quick set date

TLDR, It sucks.

That is all. 🤪

Longer version:

It does have its uses but for non travellers like me and people that allow their watches to stop for weeks at a time (big watch rotations), it is quite inconvenient to have to spin the hour hand past midnight to advance/rewind the date 1 day at a time. This is where caller/office gmts have the advantage. You get the convenience of quick set date and the added function of an independent jumping gmt hand.

***Both*** have their place. If you are thinking of getting a gmt watch, please consider these two options and their uses before you make that purchase.

Bandaid solution for me: i only wear the watch when today's date is within 1 day of the watch's current date. So when setting the time, i dont have to jump the date too far for the day.

Solution two: keep the watch running on your wrist, winding every few days, or watch winder

Solution three: get a quartz gmt

Any further suggestions welcome🤗

"So why did you get the watch, if you don't need a traveller's gmt?"

Because it looks fantastic!

Because i have more passion than sense.

Because i am easily influenced by youtubers.

Because the spirit 37mm is too smol and the spirit 40mm has a date at 3'oclock position.🤪

I like the idea of a gmt but can't see the usage unless you travel a lot.

Very wise advice but my brain doesn't listen to reason.😄

Take up flying and you'll be using UTC wherever you are, so a GMT watch makes total sense.

Perfect reason to buy one 🤣

..wow really glad I read this. That’s kinda crazy think about. That’s a very specific function decision by longines. Watch still looks stunning though. How do you feel about the thickness.

Oh the watch looks totally awesome minus the inconvenience of the date changing - which would not be an issue if used for its intended purpose.

Thickness does not bother me at all since i never wear sleeves. The case is a bit hefty but if worn with a snug fit, there is no worry of it flopping around.

I'm glad the rant was able to help someone in their gmt buying decisions 🤗

So great to hear cause these watches look way above their tier.

*pats my Eco-Drive GMT with fondness*

When Citizen gives you both the jump hour and quick set dates, heh! 😎

Or work with people around globe. Modern world is very globalized

So ridiculous didn't see this function in such expensive watch, even my Seiko SSK003 have it.

Does this affect only 37mm or 40mm too?

It is not actually a bad thing when used for the intended purpose, which is travelling and moving across time zones. In which case you can just jump the hour hand forward or backward depending on what time it is at the location of your destination country/city. It becomes an inconvenience though if you ever let the watch stop running and the date moves far away from the current date because you need to move the hour hand past midnight each and every day you want to set on the date window

·

My Zulu Time was my most worn watch of 2023, so the date was never that far out. It's such a fantastic piece, I think i'd still love it if I had to change the date by 30 every time!

I don't get the point why one feature disable another. Both my GMT watches caller and traveler can do both things step hour hand and quick date change.

If your date is off by 30 you can just go backwards/counterclockwise hehe. Would be faster. But yes, no doubt the watch looks handsome and i love the look of mine, the absence of a quick set date is just very inconvenient for my use case (which is not the watch's fault, just that it doesn't integrate with my lifestyle. But like i said i have the bandaid solution in place and content with it.😁)

What brand. That is the preferred type of gmt. 🥰

My Timex Chronograph has the same date advance as a traveller's GMT. Which I forget every month I have to advance the date. 😎

February 28 is the worst 😆

Grand Seiko 9F Quartz GMT ?

My 9F85 3 hand quartz actually is a jump hour watch, to keep me from having to hack the movement when setting the time to a new timezone. It is great except during february 28 when you have to advance the date 3 days (non leap year) the following morning 😄

Maybe, if nothing else, they could use a pusher like old Orient day-date movements used to have. But an updated version could have it only able to be engaged once the crown is in the 2nd position

Too much to ask for apparently 😄

Callers have their place despite what the internet tells you.

Agreed. love my seiko5 gmt 🤗

·
cota123

Clearly you need to buy a caller GMT to add to the travel GMT. It is the only way to go.

I Have one in the seiko5 gmt 😁

I have all 3 types of GMTs: quartz, traveler and office. And I use the office far more times. I work from home and need to track 2 other time zones. My Glycine works great for this. Plus the 36mm vintage size, plus the incredible heritage. And if you're really wanting the romance of those early flight days, you can get a 24hr bezel type. Wonderful!

Yay glycine🤩

I have their combat sub in bronze 🥰

In my job, I'm on calls woth folks all over. Used to have a weekly meeting with London and Bangalore at the same time. Tracking 3 timezones is actually useful as I didn't want to wake up or call after hours my London or Indian Co workers.

But I don't travel much. But because folks have it in their minds that a luxury gmt *has* to be a traveller's or the obnoxiously pompous *true* gmt, I am looking at those because I like those mote stylistically.

True most upper level gmts are all traveller types. Sigh

·

If not used for frequent traveling it is more design thing than functionality. I travel app. 20% of my work time and appreciate "true" gmt movement

·

I have an astron and love it. I settled for the radio control one instead of the gps version as the subdials dirty up the face of the watch for me

Yeah--I definitely get that some of the GPS models have a LOT happening on those dials, though there are at least a couple of color schemes that emphasize legibility. I've also been impressed with the newer, smaller titanium cases. For serious travelers, it's really the perfect companion.

This is why you should consider a Citizen with the A060 HAQ solar movement. In addition to a jump hour hand, it also tracks months and leap years. You only have to touch the crown twice a year, to jump the hour hand forward or back for daylight savings. And you don't have to replace the battery.

Would love to own one of the washi paper dialed citizens one day
