My Gateway Drug
2022, the year I fell in love with watches.
It all started one day when I was skimming through my dad’s old travel magazines and came across some pages of Rolex and Omega. I was enthralled by the beauty of the watches.
So I jumped on the internet to research about these watches. It was like a snowball effect, searching about Rolex and Omega to their more affordable alternatives of the likes of Seiko and Orient. Next thing I knew I wanted to buy myself a new watch and my birthday was coming up so in commemoration, I wanted to do just that
After thorough research, I found out that I wanted a watch that was robust with a water resistance of 200m and could take a beating when brought to adventure. A case size of under 40mm to suit my 6 inch wrist. And I also wanted one on a bracelet. A jubilee one preferably, for that added extra flashiness in case I wanted to dress it up.
I had options that fit my budget at that time. From Orient to Citizen to Casio to Timex. But ultimately I chose to stick with Seiko, the same brand of watch my dad gave me 5 years prior.
So, a week before my birthday, I was strolling around in a mall, searching for that piece when I stumbled upon this beauty right here. It was everything I wanted in a watch. Tough and vintage sized that looks good for work and play. Priced at around $230
And after doing some research on what the prices for a brand new SKX were at that time, it was a little under the average. Which, to me, was a no brainer decision for purchase and meant that this was the one.
So for my first ever watch purchase, I scooped up the SKX013 for a good price and been rocking it ever since with no plans on selling it anytime soon.
It’s safe to say that this was my gateway drug into the world of watch collecting and I would not change this organic story one bit. Been a watch nerd ever since, and I look forward to what the future holds for me in this wonderful hobby!

Great choice for first purchase and am sure will be the first of many 😜I think every collection has/has had an SKX in it.
I'd say $230 for a brand new SKX013 is a very good price. Congratulations! My gateway drug was an SKX007. I tried many other watches. But the 007 remains my favourite and holds a special place in my heart. They say you never forget your first. 🙄
