Vintage Elgin

When joining the local Redbar chapter, one of the questions they ask is what got you interested in watches. The answer is easy because I wanted to be like my Dad. When I was little, he always wore a watch. Over the years, he had three watches, but the one he wore when I was little that made me want one of my own was a small Elgin tank-style watch from the late 50s. I have been looking for one in good running shape and not beaten up for a long time, and I came across this one. It just arrived, I have cleaned it, and it is spectacular. Yes, it does show its age in places, but it is in fantastic shape. For me, this watch brings back all those memories of being a small child hanging with my Dad.

My grandmother's 1926 Elgin Art Deco watch. Still runs. Remember my grandmother wearing it.

Very similar to my Dad's Elgin tank that he wore through the 60s and into the 70s. He was wearing a quartz by the time i was a kid, but I remember as one of the few old keepsakes he kept in a small box. Fascinating how small it was compared to his later watches and mine. He passed away last year and this is the only mechanical he left behind.

It's awesome that you still have it and cherish it. The only watch that my Dad actually owned and wore is the Accutron that I wore in his memory Thursday evening. It's not mechanical, but of course has the tuning fork movement which makes it unique. If you have any of those quartz watches of his those are good to keep too. Quartz lasts for a long time and remain fairly accurate even with age.

He had a few other cheap Seiko and Timex gold tone quartz watches, all with the same type of gold tone expansion bracelet (creature of habit). I decided to distribute them to the grandsons in the family, a couple of whom wear them on special occasions, I understand. Giving them something to remember him by and maybe even inspiring them to wear real watches also.
