Seems like a completely whacked-out obsession.

Maybe it’s the miniature mechanical wonder of springs and wheels—or a tiny rock vibrating 32,768 times per second—that captures us. Or perhaps we can see with our own eyes the length, width, and height of everything around us, but it’s that aesthetically pleasing bit of wrist candy that tells us where we are in the fourth dimension. Maybe it grounds us.

I just like watches. I have since I was a kid a few decades ago.

No rhyme

No reason

I just like watches

Throughout most of history, time has been a relatively approximate concept, measured by the seasons, night and day, a burning candle or oil lamp, the sun's position in the sky, etc.

As technology advanced, accurate time tracking became increasingly important, allowing for even more advancement and eventually human achievements that would have been unimaginable just a few decades before. Why do so many aspire to wear the watch that went to the moon? The precise tracking of time to current levels of accuracy is a modern super power. We are privileged to glimpse into the 4th dimension with astonishing precision, with just a glance at a beautifully crafted piece of art that rests easily on our wrists.

Some of us like shiny things. Some like feeling special because of the type of watch they wear. Some like the history of a brand. Some like niche brands.

Does it matter?

We just like watches.

And they make us happy.

Your thinking too hard about it, It's simple. Watches fun to look at, Interactive, fashion accessories, tracking time or a multitude of other applications. Also for me, it's about researching older watches and the designs. Did I mention fun to look at?

While I agree with @whitesalmon about "thinking about it too hard," for me there's something inherently satisfying about having a watch that doesn't have a screen. Automatics are even better because there's not even a battery! Just the idea of the gears and cogs makes me like my watch even thought I can't see them moving.

They are fascinating!
