commented on Why are so few watches "made in USA"? ·

In addition to all the reasons here related to the general decline in American manufacturing, the “Made in the USA” standard is much more stringent than “Swiss Made”. I believe the Swiss requirement is 60% of the watch value (and value can be played around with on balance sheets in all kinds of ways) while the US standard is 95% or more.

Nice backdrop! And spot on, if you’re not putting the watches to use then what’s the point of owning them in the first place!

commented on Micro brands and resale/trade value ·

I rarely sell watches, but microbrand value retention has caused me to be much more selective with my purchasing from these types of brands.

Sure, most non hype brands also depreciate significantly, but they also tend to have a higher, more stable “floor” price long term. Where that micro you bought 10+ years ago may depreciate to practically nothing over time, there will probably be a market for that vintage omega or Cartier you can’t stand to look at anymore.

Definitely a personal choice I’m struggling with right now! I’m on the list for a VC overseas dual time and if I do get it, it would put a serious drain on the checking account to the point where it seems a bit silly.

Definitely not dipping into savings accounts for watches though! But if you have a savings account specifically for watches that’s a different story.

I’d probably go the new bezel route, especially if I got to keep the old one. Battle damage mode!

What kind of demagnetizer do you have? I’ve got a similar timegrapher but haven’t seen much info on consumer demagnetizers.
