Rolex Sub….a love & Hate relationship

Have on the old rolly today because I needed to change the date! Have really fallen out of love with the brand in the pass few years ( mainly due to flippers & availability) what are your thoughts? Love or Hate….?

Why hate it when you have it? Flippers and availability shouldn’t bother you since you already have the watch.

·

🔥🔥

·

Too expensive but still really like the clean simple designs of the original Explorer the Air King, Oyster ect. But I really don't like "bling" so most of their top models leave me cold.

·

I still love Rolex! Great watches.

I don’t hate the watch, just have fallen out of love with the brand 😊

Damn! I must learn to read properly. 😅😆

They're expensive and flexy and often worn by people I don't like. I'm not a fan of the designs. And the ADs have a terrible reputation. Plus, watch channels on YouTube are like... Rolex, Rolex, blah, blah, blah.

I'm indifferent, tbh. Ho hum. 🙄

The funny thing is that it was very reasonably priced when I got it around 17-18 years ago ( can’t remember the exact year ) but due to flippers & lack of availability the price has shoot up to a crazy stupid level. Which have made me full out off love with the brand!

Often. Not always. 😀

I think Rolex owning Watch Crunchers just like Rolex watches. But there's a certain kind of creepy, flexing, second hand car selling spiv...

My apologies to any creepy, flexing, second hand car selling spivs here on Watch Crunch. But it's true.

You can see the RRP has gone up far, far more than inflation so even bought new they are overpriced IMO. I have a couple of vintage pieces (1960's) and although nowhere near the quality of new Rolex they are nicer watches to own. For me anyway.

Indifference because of price & I want a luxury buying experience not a lepper beggars experience. If I can’t walk in to a boutique, try on the watch and decide I want it , pay retail or even better receive a discount… hard pass ….. no hate on the watches , they are just unobtanium at retail and life is too short to obsess over any material object .

That is exactly what I am saying, we are the customers and will stay your customers buy choice nothing else! We are not here to beg you to sell to us. Especially nowadays when we have so much choice. We don’t have to put up with this crap anymore and we shouldn’t have to.

I Get where your coming from my friend, different angle with me it's the stigma and the mass appeal that puts me off plus price hike, still love most there models daydate dragged me into this in the first place 😂still would like I vintage dj but can't fly under the radar with a jubilee ether and that would be my reason plus fluted bezel too recognizable and wanted by the masses of none watch enthusiasts and hyenas and I'm no one's dinner

Agree about the mass appeal and under the radar. I admit that they make nice watches and are nice to wear, but these things are expensive and for me to have to worry about all of the other things that surround the watch or brand it kind of sucks the joy out for me.

End of the day, I don’t look down at my wrist and smile and feel that I have value and enjoyment in my watch when I wear my Rolex. Just me, to each their own.

Yes I guess, this and many of their models are great everyday watches but believe me they can be “destroyed “

unfortunately I have done so and it a story i am not proud off ( a mix of stupidity & carelessness).

That’s why I started taking my watch off when I’m cleaning my car or go to playground with the kids 😂

Boom, now that’s a responsible luxury Watch owner ( not to mention a good parent cause you take time out to go with the kids to the playground).👍

I liked some of the more classic Rolexes, but I see them differently now. Other brands have improved and refined designs, complications and materials, making Rolex watches look tired and dated rather than classic. Now, whichever Rolex I consider, there is a much better alternative.

·

Most of my favourite watch designs are Rolex. The fan base is a cesspit but that doesn’t actually affect me in any way day to day.

I did have a very unpleasant conversation with some cryptocurrency enthusiasts due to wearing one in a T-shirt in public a while back. I wouldn’t wear a Rolex visibly in built up areas in case something like that happened again

I agree with all of this. It hits the nail on the head. Rolex conduct mystery shops on the ADs and expect great service from them. Some do give a great service. But, the ADs have huge waiting lists. They do not get the inventory to meet demand and the demand is huge. They may have 300 people waiting for GMT Master II Pepsi and they will only receive 10 a year. Therefore managing customers expectations is really difficult. The sales people in the stores are just as frustrated as anyone else. But what’s the solution? Rolex are rumoured to make 1M watches a year. How many would they have to make to meet demand? They won’t make 5M watches a year-so, I’m not sure what they can do

If Rolex made enough watches to meet the waiting list demand the secondary market prices would drop like a brick. As value retention is a key reason many choose Rolex, they won't do it, they could easily as they are all machine made, instead they make more Tudor so they don't devalue the Rolex brand.

Hells yeah, it’s been what I have been saying all along. Why put up with all the BS they put you through and on top off that pay just absolutely crazy inflated prices! Where you can go to Omega or Grand Seiko and walk out with a beautiful piece of art and a great investment!?!? As I say before….Rolex…I am over it.

The demand is too high. They make 1M watches a year. How many do you think they can make? To put it in perspective Omega make 500,000 a year. ADs have drawers full of Omegas they can’t sell unless they offer a discount.

·

It's a nice watch it's the flippers that's taking advantage of the situation

·

I love the watches. Everything else surrounding the brand and owners is unfortunate. I try to separate the two but sometimes the negativity does creep in. I have one explorer which I love and that’s it.

The Explorer is one of my favourites too, a “can do anything where anytime “ kind of watch, a classic I hope to own one day ( if Rolex will start selling them again ) however i won’t be getting it from a flipper! 🤝

Only things I truly hate are taxes and humidity. As for Rolex, love ‘em🤙❤️

·

Love Rolex at retail! Hate it at grey market prices

I have always wanted a Rolex. From my teenage years to now and I’m 51. My dad has an 80’s Datejust that will be mine some day. The more I got into watches my goal of having a Rolex hasn’t changed. The crap practices kinda made me a tad sour but the desire is still there. For some reason I feel like my collection won’t be complete until I have one. Not my dads but one I picked out and bought. I’m not looking at it as status symbol either. It’s just a goal I’ve always had. One day I will buy one. Just need to find the right occasion. It’s for sure not my “grail”. If money was no object I would have a Lange or GO. So for me Rolex is a goal. A goal I’ve had for decades. Maybe when I retire or my oldest gets married? Who knows. When the time is right I will have one. Until then I’m just going to keep doing what I do.

This is a fantastic goal and you are in it for all the right reasons and I hope you achieve it.

The reality is that, you probably won’t be able to pick your Rolex out and walk in and buy that piece when you are ready after years and achievements to get you to that point and that’s sad, it’s terrible actually. You’ll then be hit with the reality of buying a Rolex today.

It’s not the watch, it’s the market, the hype, the dealer network, social/fashion influence, and unfortunately it’s degrading the brand or experience at the same time. Nothing that Rolex or the watch did, just reality of the world you’d be buying in today.
