GS SBGE281 JDM

Does anyone think the power indicator on this GS GMT model looks out of place? Seems like it was an afterthought as to where to put it. I wish they made all spring drive models without this indicator.

Difficult to say from pictures. You should try to get your hands on one at an AD.

·

Yeah it's placed too near the indices.. Or the indices are too big. Or both. Bottom center is much nicer.

·

Not too bad for me at least from the picture, but agree that you must see it in the metal to decide

Thanks for the comments! I actually did see it in person and really liked how it had a compact dial and case with the beveled numbers. The location of the power indicator bothered me a bit and was wondering what other people thought. It’s slightly different than the location of previous spring drive watches. Here’s a comparison vid to the SBGA375: https://youtu.be/MWlQ48A9Jwc

I love ALL GS and ALL GS are perfect in my book.  You dare to question the aesthetics of a GS on the Internet???

I do understand what you mean. I think on some it works, such as the SBGH289G (Divers watch) but I do feel like it ever so slightly detracts from a few of their beautiful faces.

The good thing with GS is they seem open to criticism & actually take it onboard. I know on some of their newer modles with Spring drives they are now putting the power indicator on the rear of the case.

Strangely enough, GS's placement of the power reserve indicator started to grow on my the moment they started putting it on the back of the movement. 😅 There is a strange "asymmetrical symmetry" to this design that could only be explained as some sort of japanese design philosophy wizardry.

·

Personally I don’t think it looks too bad, however I could totally understand how having it hidden in the back could make for a more straight forward dial. Comes down to personal preference I guess. Also I think the color of the dial and power indicator also play a role on how busy it could look.

Power reserve indicators are the most criticized aspects of Grand Seikos, and I find them to be charming.  I haven't seen an example that has turned me off.

·

@horologuitarist pretty much summed it up here perfectly. I always thought they were unusual looking, but that’s part of the charm. It’s awesome.

I guess the power indicators are now better because they are just on top of the dial, without digging a hole (?) on the beautiful dial like what the snowflake does

I understand the love for the quirkiness of Japanese design language, but sometimes I feel like they’re just one small step from creating a perfect watch. Thanks for all of the comments though, and I think you’ve swayed me more into getting it 😅
