Sarb Alternative?

Image

I originally saught after a Sarb 033, mostly for the deep black dial. After watching many youtube videos on Sarbs, I came across one that compared the Sarb to this black dial Orient Star. Quite an interesting outcome in the video. The Orient was better in many ways, and cheaper to buy new than buying a used Sarb. The black was also deeper, and although still is a bit brown in direct sunlight, not as brown looking as the 033. So the choice was pretty obvious for me. I know the dial is not as simple, and the orient does have quite a bit going on. But I figured maybe I'd be less board with it? The extra complication just adds to the watch for me. Idk. All I know is that I'm pretty happy with the decision I made. Maybe too happy because I ended up buying the white dial as well. Owning both, I can confirm the black dial is the way to go. Its beautiful in my opinion. The white one is too, but doesnt go as well with the highly pollished indices. This goes out to anyone disappointed in the high prices of the Sarbs like I was. I'd recommend watching that video. I agree most of Orient's watches in terms of design are not as good as seiko. But when they do get a design right, its right. The build quality and QC I'd argue are better, so why not take advantage of their good watches? Something that isnt the Kamasu or bambimo, because I can't say those are flying under the radar 😂 But a few of the Stars are. At one point these watches were going for just under 400 usd. The value at the point was just CRIMINAL. It's amazing to me not a lot of people saw it that way.

I completely agree with you and have also considered your orient star a good and in some ways superior model.

My only orients so far are divers and I have no star model but this is definitely the way to go.

Very underrated and a bit of a sleeper.

I'm also a big power reserve indicator fan though I know many aren't!

Great watch!!!

I love power meters on dials! Everyone always says, "Why do you need a power meter on an automatic?"

And they say it like this...

Image

I always wanna respond, "Well, it's fun to wind the crown and see the power reserve go up!"

For French/European people it's available in white, black or blue and for less than 500€ here : https://ocarat.com/orient-star/ (with 10% welcome discount)

For that price I think it's still a really interesting watch : 38.5mm,metal bracelet, applied indices, 50h power reserve,...

Just might be a bit thick at 12mm

Yes! Also comes in handy if you try to keep your watches running when you're not wearing them. I've found it to be pretty useful to see when its running low. And of course, it fun to wind it up!

Yes, the thickness is probably my biggest complaint. But really, its not a big complaint. I don't notice it if you keep the bracelet on. Its when you a put a strap on it, it looks like it stands a bit tall.

I have no idea what you’re talking about 😜

Orient are so underrated and from my experience they are better build quality than most mid range Seiko or any Swiss brand under £1000 you can name.

I almost pulled the trigger on this exact watch. Beautiful piece. I wouldn't even say not having saphire is the issue for me, its the price of it with not having a saphire crystal :/ I would buy one for the right price, I love the old classy look.

Orient Stars are fantastic value. I have two and am on the hunt for a specific third, but the only example I've seen is priced a little high. Also, power reserve metres are one of the few complications that are actually useful for modern mechanical watches... I wish all my watches had them, whether it be on the dial itself, or maybe on the back, like in Oris's new handwinder.
