In the latest Gentry video, TGV states that the #TudorBlackBay watches are not good substitutes for a Submariner. I agree. He also stated that if you want more of a Submariner feel there are other options, which include the Steinhart Ocean One, that do a better job of feeling like a Sub. I also agree. I own several Steinhart and Tudor pieces. So I'd be willing to say I have a decent amount of experience with them. The Black Bay divers DO utilize some of the key design characteristics that are sought after and loved in vintage Submariners. But that doesn't mean that the Black Bay is or is trying to be a Sub. It is its own thing and it is phenomenal. Many boohoo the thick case, whereas I love it. It is subjective and it makes the piece unique. If you have the wrist for it, it is stupendously well fitting. My wrist is a bit over 7" and rather flat on top. I wear them and they are perfect for me. Tudors are their own thing, even the vintage Tudor Subs ARE NOT Rolex Submariners. When I began watching collecting, I too looked for a Submariner alternative. Nearly all watch enthusiasts do. From the under $100 price point all the way to several thousand, many brands offer pieces that try to capture the Submariner's allure. The best that I have found that does this is Steinhart. It by no means IS a Sub. The case is different, the lugs are different, and the overall feel is different. But the quality, workmanship, and attention to detail is superb for the price point. You simply CANNOT find a better brand that can supply a Submariner vibe regardless of the price point. Steinhart often are described as not having any originality. I feel this is unjustified. There are several unique Steinharts, but the entire subject of the question subverts the ability to be original...what is the best Submariner alternative? That cannot be answered with an original design. TGV and I agree, it cannot be answered by a Black Bay certainly. I say buy a Tudor because you love and want the Tudor, and if you want a Submariner feel get a Steinhart. Or solve the conundrum completely; just buy a Rolex Submariner.

Love or loathe TGV, the question is brought up so often it should be addressed. As with many things the answer is subjective.

It’s only a substitute if you think of it as a substitute.

Wear what you love, words to live by

I had sub money, but I bought the Tudor instead because it's not a sub replacement. It is it's own watch. The blue is more navy, the case different, the hands, the everything.

I don't want a sub, I want a BB58

I agree, two very different watches now. Might just be me or maybe just 'sour grapes', I think Rolex's design is looking dated, where Tudor is reinventing it's timeless designs.

There are so many other watches that have the submariner "look" heck I have a few myself. Tudor is unmistakably tudor, great watches for the money. I would love to get a 41mm heritage bb one day but if I don't as I'm really thinking about getting out of the watch game, I still have my chrono that I really love.

He said "wear what you love", not "wear the imitation of what you love". Here you are telling us that the imitation of what you love is what you love. So be it! 🙏🏻

It’s only a substitute if you think of it as a substitute.

It is a substitute if at the same price, you would chose the other. And we know that it is the case...

Hitting the nail on the head.

They are pretty incredible. The amount the hate they get is probably due to how good they are. Might make some a bit angry for spending more. It is what it is. They are definitely the best you can get for the money

Not sure I follow what you wrote. I’m saying you can buy a watch that looks like a sub and not intend it to be a substitute for the sub. Tudor and Steinhart stand on their own in terms of quality and attractiveness. The video has a slanted point of view, imo.

Love the “clomage” portmanteau!
