Vermont police trooper allegedly stole a Rolex

A Vermont state trooper allegedly stole a Rolex along with other belongings from an evidence room according to reports

Interesting article from tide and tide watches. It makes me think about a larger question - is Rolex worth it ? Is the brand perception actually more valuable than the watches themselves ? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ - thoughts ?

Is the brand perception actually more valuable than the watches themselves ?

Absolutely. Outside the small minority of enthusiasts that GAF about superlative accuracy or robust movements or whatever, the overwhelming majority of the populace cares about a status symbol and little else. Of course on the flip side, my suspicion is that the hoi polloi are oblivious to the true nature of Rolex pricing and think they are $1-4k MSRP items with normal depreciation.

In general I think brand perception is usually more valuable than the actually product. For example say you see someone wearing a plain white tee with the Gucci brand printed across the chest. Most would assume it's an expensive shirt which it probably is but the actually product quality is that of a discount brand like Hanes. But given the brand perception, a lot of people would prefer the Gucci if they can afford it. If you ask norms to list watch brands they probably would list a lot of fashion brands, maybe citizen and seiko, and Rolex. Even if Rolex is considered "entry-level" in the realm of ultra luxury watches most non watch people think Rolex are the best and most expensive. Of course the quality and value are subjective to each person

Teddy did a good YT video where he asked normal people to guess prices of watches and it's pretty clear non watch people don't value watches the same way people in this group do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gaiFsgeO1k

That’s a really good analogy of how people desire materialistic items.

It’s funny how the more I appreciate and learn about watches, i would love to own a Rolex, but the reality is, I want one less, because I am starting to see the brand purely as a status symbol, for me, that is so much less appealing.

Theft is really getting out of hand, just a few weeks ago someone stole my fathers daytona, fortunately he is ok, but gosh! I found a platform that was made to report stolen watches, it’s called JoinTrack.org I hope this helps a bit.
