Forgive me Watch Crunchers, for I have sinned.
Ok everyone, I have a confession to make. After purchasing a bespoke custom high end watch for the first time, I must admit, as I’m among friends here, that I fell into the “Prestige Watch Ego Flex” trap.
Because I knew I had a one of a kind special on my wrist, I was shocked and disappointed that no one noticed. Ever. Not one comment or glance, in a number of years, nothing. It’s not that I was trying to seem better than anyone else and show off. I honestly thought it would open up interesting conversations with fellow watch nerds like me. Turns out, no. No one cares.
So it completely shocked me when I bought a new daily beater, a humble G-Shock GW-M5610U-1BER and I have had 5 lovely strangers in 3 months approach me on my travels to talk about it and watches in general! Who’d have thought?!
So, I have learned a lesson. My watch nerd-ism has matured and I have realised the only thing that matters is how much that lovely timepiece on your wrist makes YOU smile. No one else’s opinion matters and the big take home for me is that no one else actually cares.
Plus, if you are an Insta influencer type of person… I’d say buy a classic G-Shock to photograph while behind the wheel of your Bugatti, I guarantee it will get more likes! 😂

Spot on. I don't think any of my expensive pieces get a reaction, maybe if they had a crown on them, but something that's a bit different from the expected may get noticed. As you say, buy for yourself, every time, not for the flex.
It’s a hard lesson, but worth learning. Nobody cares about your watch or car or whatever you’re super-into. My Casio AE1200 has gotten me more comments than all my other watches combined, and that’s only like 3 comments.
Only the F91W will do. G-shocks are too posh.

Believe me, even a watch with a crown goes unnoticed.

GShock is a common language that most everyone knows about. I'm not sure what your bespoke watch is but not everyone would recognize it as a special piece.
I never held a modern Omega, Rolex, Cartier etc. in my hand. But I saw them all so often on social media that they feel boring to me 🤷🏻♂️
Although I would be so damn proud if I had one of my grail watches myself 😅🤔
