Dime a dozen but so cool!

It’s not a vintage Sub or Fifty-Fathoms, but it sure is a darn cool looking vintage “skin diver”!

They were a dime a dozen in the 60s and 70s. There were dozens of brands that used the same cheap EB8800 or 8810 movement, plated case, dial, and hands. The only difference was the name on the dial.

I admittedly paid too much for this one a couple of years ago under the pretense that it was running and keeping time. It was not and became a $100 paper weight, until I overhauled it last week.

For a 40-50 year old, cheap 1 jewel movement, I am very happy with a loudly ticking +/-20 ish spd. And, again, it just looks so cool!

What are your thoughts on the vintage “skin divers”?

Haven’t thought about that one, but I can absolutely see that!

It looks 🔥 and you wear it well Jason. The Watch God's will be looking over you for doing due diligence and bringing one of their own back to life 🙏🏽.

Many thanks, sir! 🙏🙏🙏 My desire is to restore all the watches.

I think you sum it up perfectly - look great, terrible insides. The lure is hard to resist; I’ve owned many, and kept very little. I have a Delta Computer that I intend to salvage with potentially a quartz or NHx movement, but I need to plan it properly.

Great looking watch, I know skin divers are usually smaller than the 40mm minimum dive watches usually have. What's the disk size of this one?

I think I’ll be keeping this one. The externals were in fantastic shape and only needed a little cleaning. The loud ticking of the pinned fork is actually kind of endearing and nostalgic, as it reminds me of my first Timex as a kid. It’s a great wearing weekend piece. Best of luck with your project! 🤝

Looks excellent.

Love em, but getting a good one can be tricky. I've a few (luckily with decent servicable movements). Because they were cheap most have had a hard life, but when you do find one it's a gem.

My Tara's got an uncanny resemblance to yours.

Agree there - when they work, they work. I have too many that do not, but we all know why we do what we do.

Love them. Actually just bought a vintage one jewel diver myself today. It's broken so it will be a project.

Best of luck with the project! If it’s a EB8800 movement, the trail wheel bridge can be a pain in the butt to get all the pivots lined up. Looking forward to seeing photos of the final product.

They may have been a dime a dozen back then but I bet that they are hard to find in good shape these days. This one looks great.

Those are really cool, and you don’t see them very often. You’d be like Richard Dreyfus’s character in Jaws. I think I remember hearing or seeing somewhere that is what he was wearing in the movie.

Yeah, it’s the watch he was wearing. Saw it featured in Hodinkee I think. Your watch looks just as cool. Love those old fashioned cyclops lens. Is this 36m? Or bigger?

That’s fantastic! I have actually contemplated pulling the trigger on a vintage Sheffield model recently on eBay that looked to be in good aesthetic condition. Figured I may be able to revive it. What movement does the neuvo Sheffield use?

It's an nh35, and they've managed to keep the watch quite slim (not your usual chunky offering). A lot of the vintage Sheffield's had low or no jewelled movement's so if you see one hopefully they'll be a picture of the movement, I've had pin pallets and low jewelled movements and tbh a lot are junk because once they get a bit of wear on them it's a whole load of parts or a movement change.

37mm case. Wears very similar to my Tudor Black Bay 54.

Thanks. They had to have the aesthetics just right to make up for the crappy movement. 😄

Such a good looking style. If only they could have put just a little bit better movement in them.

You are correct. They are hard to find in good working order and aesthetically. The outsides of mine were in very good shape. It took some work and a balance swap to get this one keeping adequate time.

Love the markers! Glad you got it running again.
