Quartz?! Why my opinion has changed.

I’m not going to be talking about digital watches; only three handers. I had a hard line against quartz watches for over 20 years. The reason was because of seconds hand did not hit the markers. The quartz watches were cheap and had poor quality control. My opinion has changed. One of my daily watches is a Seiko Tank SWR049. Last year, I saw a Citizen Chronomaster, PRX quartz and few others. All of them the seconds hand was hitting the markers. Now, my opinion has been reinforced by you get what you pay. Or like my Seiko just don’t buy a quartz cheap watch with seconds hand.

Yeah, I was pretty anti quartz but ended up with a quartz Aqua Terra and I can't fault it.

Nothing against quartz now 👍

I get the change of heart and the need for a maker bullseye. Makes a big difference for us watch enthusiasts. You definitely get what you pay for especially on a quartz watch.

I generally agree, however my quartz Duro hits the markers exactly and always has done. And I paid £45 for it. There are good cheap quartzes out there.

My MDV-106's second hand does not hit all the second markers dead-on, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the watch ... it'd be nice if it did (and some of my other "inexpensive" quartz pieces actually do), but I'm not gonna get bent out of shape over it, so no biggie ...

If mine didn't I'd still think it's a great watch. I'm a big fan of it, and quartz in general.

I Bought a Bertucci quartz for a whopping $75 primarily for the bright yellow dial and strap that scratched an itch for a cheap beater summer watch. Much to my surprise and pleasure, the second hand has no back flutter and hits all the indices. Sometimes you just get a pleasant surprise!

I like mechanical watches for the sweep of the hands, but I also like quartz watches especially when they hit the markers as you say.

I think both types offer two different ways of measuring or considering the passing of time: you can see it as something continuous, flowing and escaping from us like sand in an hourglass: this is the mechanical watch, in that view, the best, in my opinion, would be the SpringDrive movement with the gliding second hand (or a 5 Hz movement, then 4 Hz more bph, etc.) or like something definite, that you can count, one second at a time, and for that, the best is a Quartz movement where you can clearly see how it ticks and hits the markers, without stuttering or going back.

Seiko and Citizen both make great quartz movements on which they go to great lengths to get exactly that, on top of accuracies of 10, 5, or even 1 second per year, they also feature automatic hand position correction, shock detection, and anti-backlash mechanisms. I don't view those as inferior to mechanical movements at all, I would love to get my hands on a Citizen Chronomaster or a Grand Seiko with the 9F movement.

I bought the same tank you have this year on holiday in Texas,,, had it on once, the wife swiped it and can't get it off her 🙄

Right on! I feel similarly about my Rotary Cambridge, it makes perfect sense for a dress watch to be a quartz watch without a second hand. I only wear it occasionally and the quartz keeps it super slim.

I also think Bulova (Citizen Group) should be utilizing the heck out of their sweeping Precisionist movements. I can’t understand why they only put it in their gigantic, mall kiosk watches. The new Jetstar does seem promising though!

Just mentioned the Precisionist in another comment, I also think all those brands should be utilizing the heck out of their sweeping quartz movements. I can’t understand why they only put it in their gigantic, mall kiosk watches.

Imagine a Precisionist Eco Drive🤯

My Casio Edifice hits every marker perfectly. My Seiko which is over 4 times the price hits about half the markers. I'm new to watches. Got the Seiko about a year before any other watches. When I realised how poor the Seiko was at hitting the markers and how spot on my Casio and Timex is.. I have to say Seiko as a brand went down in my estimation. I won't be buying any Seiko watches until I can restore confidence

I’d buy that in a heartbeat.
