WHERE ARE ALL THE MISSING WATCH BOXES

If you search for a pre-owned watch, they are often sold without box and papers.. But why?

Can we auto-banned the savages that are throwing away box and papers?

·

Majority of people are not watch enthusiast and throw away the box and papers once they have the watch. It’s only us watch nerds who care about box and papers.

·

All the preowned watches I've bought all had box and papers.

I wouldn't but them any other way.

I think it depends on the age of the watch - the older it is, the more likely it is they got lost somewhere along the way. Anything less than 5-10 years old and I immediately wonder if it's stolen. 🫤

*I clarify they are only the empty boxes the watches are in their respective special portfolio

Are they yours 😀

Yep almost all the boxes of my watches are stored there

This is a good question, my AD tells me that Breitling is down sizing their packaging to ADs, it recently purchased a Breitling and all I got was a little blue box the out box wasn't included cause they going "Green" to reduce waste I guess. I had another dealer tell me the same that same. I guess after a few years people get rid of them possibly, I never will.

I leave my heavy boxes at the ad until the guy hints that I am welcomed to leave them there as long as it is convenient for me. I get the message, take the stuff with you. Papers are important but the presentation boxes and sleeves etcetera are a nuisance to store. I know very serious watch guys who would debate the value of keeping the boxes if you do not intend to sell your watches.

Keep the green ones

I have big boxes of boxes sitting on a closet shelf. They’re fine where they are.

I bet you have boxes for watches you don't even own anymore.

That explanation works but if and only if they drop their prices or slow the price increases accordingly. What are the chances that is going to happen?

This keeping the packaging thing is a recent trend… That said…If I buy something that comes with box and papers I will keep them. I often shop for things that don’t have packaging because you don’t pay as much and then don’t have the box to deal with. Also, it depends on the age of the piece. A 20 year old speedy? Who cares about the box. A 2 month old SM300 better have everything.

The overwhelming number of buyers of watches are not enthusiasts, so boxes and paper means little, so they get tossed. Good reminder that we are a very niche group.

Some people leave the box with the retailer because they don’t want them.
