Missed the call, but …

On Friday, I received the call from my local AD for a beautiful green datejust. Unfortunately I could not make it to the store until today (5 days later). When I went to the store today to check it out, it had already been sold, which is my fault for not putting down the deposit, but I still have not seen this exact model in person.

All was not lost though. My wife was with me because it was also her turn to test out a wide range of watches to see what she really likes. She has always loved Cartier and Rolex, as well as some Omega models, but has not seen very many in person. I gave her a pretty decent Frédérique Constant in 2022 to see if she would get into watches enough to wear consistently and possibly get deeper into collecting. She has since learned enough to identify a fair amount of watches when dealing with clients in her job (which they all seem to appreciate). We had a great time trying Tudor, Cartier, Rolex and even JLC (too thick).

Yesterday was the 15 year anniversary of my dad’s passing. My dad was a great guy and he loved giving gifts to my mom, as well as me and my brother. In the late 1990’s, my mom had been eyeing a watch from a local AD around Christmas. I don’t remember which brand, but my dad decided that a Rolex was a better choice and surprised her with a two tone datejust. She couldn’t believe it, but that was the kind of guy he was. My mom wears the watch every day and even wears it in the pool. It is very special to our family and always brings back great memories.

Feeling very sentimental, and having seen my wife try on lots of different options today, I decided that I want to do something for her in the same way that my dad did for my mom. She was torn between a preowned Cartier two tone Santos, certified preowned two tone datejust and a new Tudor Royal with mother of pearl, diamond bezel and two tone. She ultimately decided on the Tudor and absolutely loves it, despite thinking she would not like an integrated bracelet. My wife is the hardest working person I know and completely self-made. She deserves everything that she has and I wish I could give her more.

I didn’t get my Rolex, but I think I am happier seeing my wife enjoying her new watch. Hoping that dad would be proud.

I passed on this one a few weeks ago. In between ordering and the call I picked up this one.

Beautiful story! So happy for you all, and your selflessness is inspiring. Our fathers sound very similar.

Great story and sentiment, Garrett. Good man. 👍

·

IMHO you did the right thing . Congratulations on getting it right. Hope she wears it in the best of health.

·

Congrats to the wife! Which JLC was too thick?

When my AD calls, she gives me weeks to collect as I don't live locally. No deposit or anything. I don't understand having to be there the same day or next day.

·

Lovely watch for your wife. I'm glad she benefited and that it made you happy.

·

Selfless. Your dad would be extremely proud. Well done brother 🙌🏼

Great story and read, I bet you don’t even miss getting your DJ, this is ten times better, seems like you and your old man are cut from the same good cloth.

·

Thank you for sharing. Good on you for gifting her a special watch. Wifey wears all her watches in rotation. We are very active and she has put many memorable scratches and bumps on all her watches lol. I cringe everytime she accidentally hits her watch lol

Happy wife, happy life! 😀

Raise a glas 🥂 on all the power womans out there who works very hard and manage the whole family like a machine, as my great wife does! They really deserve to get what they wish, as my wife got a Rolex OP last fall.

Happy Woman’s Day!

What a beautiful story. If anyone asks why we like watches, this post covers 80% of the why. Thank you for sharing and your father would be very proud. Interesting choice by way! Not many women would turn down the Rolex and pick a Tudor, good for her (and you).

Top dude you are!!! 👍🏻 How is your partner liking it? Would love to see her WRUW shot with the Tudor! Beautiful timepiece! Congrats and thank you for sharing that beautiful story of your parents with the Rolex LDJ! 🙂

Congrats to the wife! Which JLC was too thick?

All of the reversos. They looked amazing though. I would definitely wear the men’s version.

That AD could have easily waited much longer for you. Anyway, well done! Best of luck for your next watch.
